No. 11 Manchester Valley Dominates Westminster, 42-23

Strong Start Sets the Tone for Manchester Valley
Manchester Valley's coach, David Dodson, knows that a solid beginning is crucial when it comes to county wrestling action. Entering their first county dual of the season against an improved Westminster team that had several returning wrestlers from last year, Dodson was aware that securing a victory on the road would not be easy. However, by the end of the night, his team was celebrating a 42-23 win over the Owls.
"We knew that with the work Westminster had been putting in and the athletes they had returning, we would have to wrestle really well tonight — and we did that," said Dodson.
The Mavericks started the match strongly with pins from Joey Day and Greyson Hydorn, followed by wins from Kayden Reid and Oliver Flores. The four consecutive victories at the start of the dual were no surprise to Dodson, who noted that the performances of his lightweights reflected what he has seen daily in the wrestling room.
"I can't say enough about the effort everyone puts in on a day-to-day basis," Dodson said. "They go in every day, are coachable and work hard."
Leadership and Young Talent
Manchester Valley is led by two of the county’s top competitors: Brayden VanDerVoort, a perennial county championship contender, and Beau Snell, the Mavericks’ quarterback in the fall who has now shifted his focus to the wrestling mat.
"They are a big part of what we do," Dodson said. "They set the right example for the younger guys with how they prepare and how they work. It’s a reason they’re both off to such great starts this year."
After Westminster began to build momentum with two wins, one of the younger wrestlers influenced by VanDerVoort and Snell stepped up. Hudson Hernandez got the Mavericks back on track with an 11-6 win over Ethan Degalicia, setting the stage for the team’s leaders to close out the dual.
"I see a lot of heart in our young guys," VanDerVoort said. "Other guys might have more talent, but they always want it more. That’s why they’re winning so many matches."
VanDerVoort followed Hernandez’s effort with a 17-0 technical fall over Liam O’Dwyer.
"I want it more than anyone this year," VanDerVoort said. "I want to climb the podium this year. That’s the goal."
Snell capped the night by pinning Chase Fisher in another strong performance.
"I’ve been working with Brayden and wrestling some of the other guys in the weights above me to get ready," Snell said. "Getting better on my feet was the main thing, and working the legs was part two."
Key Moments and Final Results
Despite strong efforts from Westminster’s Connor Ruanne at 132 pounds and pins by Daviti Guliashvili and Aiden Wengert late in the dual, the night belonged to the Mavericks, who secured their first county win of the new season.
With the heart of the season approaching and several key county duals looming, Manchester Valley showed Tuesday night it is ready for the challenge of Carroll County and eager to build on win No. 1 in its push toward the top of the standings.
"Based off tonight, our guys stepped up to the challenge," Dodson said. "We want to keep building off this as we make our way through the heart of the season."
