Kate Middleton Rejoins Royal Christmas Tradition After Cancer Journey

Kate Middleton has made a triumphant return to one of the Royal Family’s cherished Christmas traditions this year. After being unable to attend last year due to her ongoing battle with cancer, the Duchess of Cambridge was seen joining her family for the annual pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, December 17. Alongside her husband, Prince William, and their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—the royal couple arrived at the palace gates for the festive gathering.
This event, which has been a staple of the Royal Family’s holiday calendar since its inception under Queen Elizabeth II, brings together extended family members, including both working royals and those who choose not to join the King and Queen at Sandringham for the main Christmas celebrations. For Kate, now in remission from her cancer, the opportunity to participate in the tradition is a significant milestone.
For the occasion, the 43-year-old British royal chose a sophisticated red polka-dot dress by Alessandra Rich. She paired the outfit with a black velvet bow from Miu Miu and elegant Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra earrings, estimated to cost around £6,300 ($8,421). Princess Charlotte was also seen matching her mother in a red outfit and hair bow, adding a touch of festive charm to the event.
The meal typically features traditional holiday fare, such as roast turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and vegetables, creating a warm and communal atmosphere for the family.

Other notable attendees at this year’s lunch included the York sisters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, along with their partners, Jack Brooksbank and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Prince Edward, Lady Sarah Chatto, and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, were also present.
Last year, Kate was still recovering from her cancer treatment and instead spent the holidays with her family at Amner Hall in Norfolk. Although she couldn’t attend the lunch that year, she is now fully able to partake in all the Royal Family’s holiday traditions.
In January, Kate shared the news that she had successfully completed chemotherapy for an undisclosed form of cancer and was now in remission. While she has recovered from her illness, she has also taken time to honor those who have lost their lives to cancer.

In December, the Duchess visited the Ever After Garden in London, an art display that supports the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. There, she penned a heartfelt handwritten message for the installation. The note read, “In loving memory of all those who have lost their lives to cancer – C.”
She later shared a photo of the display on Instagram, writing, “Thank you to all those who have contributed to the Ever After Garden, which raises vital funds for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. Every flower, every light, is a memory held together, an illumination of shared love, remembrance, and hope – C.”
