Jane's Addiction Shatters After Explosive Stage Fight Involving Navarro and Farrell
The End of an Era: Jane’s Addiction Officially Breaks Up
After decades of creating groundbreaking music and leaving a lasting impact on the alt-rock scene, Jane’s Addiction has officially announced their breakup. The band, known for hits like “Been Caught Stealing” and “Jane Says,” shared the news on Wednesday, marking the end of a 40-year journey that saw both triumphs and turmoil.
The decision to disband came more than a year after a dramatic altercation between frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro during a concert in Boston. The incident, which occurred on September 13, 2024, led to the immediate cancellation of the rest of the tour and set off a chain of events that ultimately led to the band’s dissolution.
A Public Apology and Regret
In a statement released on Instagram, Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, and drummer Stephen Perkins expressed their regret over the events following the Boston show. They stated that they had made decisions without consulting Farrell and issued inaccurate statements about his mental health, which they now deeply regret.
“We have come together one last time to resolve our differences, so that the legacy of Jane’s Addiction will remain the work the four of us created together,” the band wrote. They added that they now look forward to pursuing individual musical and creative endeavors, while expressing their deep love for the band and its legacy.
Farrell's Response
Perry Farrell also addressed the situation in a joint statement posted on his Instagram page. He apologized for the onstage incident in Massachusetts and confirmed that the band was officially calling it quits after 40 years of performing together.
“I’d like to address what happened on stage last year,” Farrell began. “I’ve reflected on it and know I didn’t handle myself the way I should have. I apologize to our patrons and my bandmates for losing my temper and for disrupting the show.”
Farrell emphasized the significance of the band in his life, stating, “Jane’s Addiction has been at the center of my life for decades.” He thanked fans for their continued support and reiterated his commitment to providing real, honest, and positive performances.
The Boston Incident and Its Aftermath
The incident in Boston was captured on video and showed Farrell shoving and striking Navarro as crew members intervened to separate them. The performance was abruptly cut short, and the band canceled the remaining shows on the tour.
Following the event, Farrell issued a public apology, calling his behavior “inexcusable.” Meanwhile, Navarro, Avery, and Perkins released a joint statement blaming Farrell’s actions for the tour’s cancellation. In July 2025, the trio filed a lawsuit against Farrell, seeking $10 million in damages for assault and battery, emotional distress, negligence, and breach of contract.
Farrell responded with a countersuit, accusing his former bandmates of harassment, bullying, and contractual violations. He also disputed their characterization of the Boston incident and objected to statements made about his mental health.
Looking Back at the Band’s Journey
Even before the Boston incident, there were signs of tension within the band. In 2022, Farrell spoke about the challenges of touring without Navarro, who was recovering from COVID-19. At the time, he expressed hope that Jane’s Addiction would continue playing together for at least another decade.
“I wish I would have my dear guitar player around,” Farrell said. “But I live to bring entertainment and art to the world. And whatever I can do to entertain you, to blow your mind, that’s what I live for.”
He also mentioned his belief that he might have 10 more good years of performing, joking that performing Jane’s Addiction material was “like being an aerobics instructor.”
