Exclusive Starfield DLC Revealed Behind Closed Doors with Space Flight Upgrades
The Rise and Challenges of Starfield
Starfield was one of the most anticipated games in recent years, but for many players, it didn't quite live up to expectations. As the first new IP from the legendary team behind Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 3 and 4, it promised to bring Bethesda's signature sandbox RPG gameplay to the vastness of space. Led by Todd Howard, the game aimed to create a universe where players could explore countless planets, engage in deep storytelling, and experience the freedom that has defined Bethesda's titles.
However, the game faced several challenges that affected its overall reception. One of the main issues was the compatibility between the game's engine and the space travel systems. Players often encountered numerous loading screens when traveling between planets, which disrupted the flow of the experience. Additionally, the sheer scale of the game made it difficult to find high-quality, hand-crafted content, leading to a sense of emptiness in some areas of the galaxy.
The first DLC, Shattered Space, also failed to meet the expectations of many fans. While it added some new story content, it didn't provide the overhaul that many had hoped for. This left fans waiting with anticipation for more updates and improvements from Bethesda.
Teasing the Future of Starfield
In March, Bethesda began teasing the future of Starfield, but then went quiet for a while. Throughout the year, the team released some updates, but they didn't match the previous promises on social media. In September, Tim Lamb of Bethesda hinted at future developments:
"I can't go into all the details just yet, but I will say, part of the team has been focused on space gameplay to make the travels there more rewarding. We're also adding some new game systems and a few other smaller delights."

It seems that more information is on the way. Rumors suggest that Bethesda recently held an event to showcase its plans for Starfield. According to sources, the game will see significant improvements in its space flight systems, making them feel more free-form and continuous. Technical upgrades to the Creation Engine are expected to support these changes, which may also benefit future games.
Expansions and Platform Releases
One of the most exciting news is that Starfield will be released on the PlayStation 5 in 2026, as well as on the Nintendo Switch 2. The game has already undergone optimizations for "low power" devices like handhelds, which should ensure a good experience on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Some sources suggested that the expansion for Starfield was initially planned for 2025, but delays caused by Microsoft's busy holiday period and the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 pushed it to the first half of 2026. However, others, including @DetectiveSeeds on X, have reported that the updates might come later in 2026.
Conflicting Rumors and Expectations
There are conflicting opinions about the scale of the upgrade. Some sources downplay the extent of the changes, avoiding claims that it will be a "Cyberpunk 2.0 moment" for the game. Others who attended the event, reportedly led by Todd Howard himself, were more optimistic about the content being offered.
The potential expansion, possibly called "Terran Armada," is expected to continue dividing opinions among fans.
A Game with Untapped Potential
Despite its shortcomings, I really enjoyed Starfield. While it didn't have the staying power of Skyrim or Fallout 3 or 4 for me, it was a capable sandbox RPG with plenty of grand moments to discover. It never needed a "Cyberpunk 2.0 moment," but there are many things that could elevate the game with more time and investment.
In many ways, Starfield feels like it has vast amounts of untapped potential. Its lore and world-building have solid foundations, and the scale of the game's ambition is undeniable—on a scale more typical of MMORPGs or multiplayer games. However, the lack of density and the sense that points of interest (POIs) were too few in number and variation hurt the overall experience.
Fighting through large mercenary camps only to find nothing useful gets tiring after a while. I can appreciate human facilities being pre-fabricated in a 3D-printing sci-fi style, but it's a little jarring when entire natural cave systems feel identical despite being at opposite ends of the galaxy.
Looking Ahead
I'm still investigating the finer details of what the future holds for Starfield and will share more once I have the information. Tim Lamb teased a variety of new "gameplay systems and smaller delights" to go along with Starfield's next big update, which unfortunately missed its 2025 window. Hopefully, this means improvements to the variety on offer in general exploration, and maybe enhancements to itemization and things like that.

I'm told that Bethesda is quite stretched attempting to capitalize on the massive success of the Fallout TV show across multiple existing and future projects, while also building Elder Scrolls 6 — leaving less room for Starfield. If true, when DLC 2 emerges for Starfield, hopefully it'll be a good send off for what ended up being one of this generation's most polarizing games.
