Ex-ESPN Anchor Considers Major Move After Leaving TV for Politics

Michele Tafoya Considers a New Path: From Football to Politics

Former NFL sideline reporter Michele Tafoya is reportedly exploring a new career path, one that takes her from the football field to the Senate Chamber. OutKick reports that Tafoya is considering a potential run for the United States Senate in Minnesota, her home state. This move would mark a significant shift for a woman who spent nearly three decades in sports broadcasting.

Tafoya is not alone in this transition. Other sports commentators have also shown interest in political careers. For example, ESPN star Stephen A. Smith recently hinted at a presidential run in 2028. This trend reflects a growing interest among media personalities in engaging with politics and public service.

Key Meetings and Support

Last week, Tafoya reportedly met with the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), Senate Leadership Fund, and other key players during a trip to Washington, D.C. The NRSC and its chairman, South Carolina senator Tim Scott, are allegedly actively courting the ex-NFL reporter for the Senate race in Minnesota. Tafoya has already started receiving calls from supporters, indicating a strong level of interest in her potential candidacy.

A Career in Sports Broadcasting

Over an illustrious broadcasting career that lasted nearly three decades, Tafoya worked for several major networks, including NBC, ESPN, ABC, and CBS. While working as a sideline reporter for Sunday Night Football on NBC, she made a deliberate choice to keep her conservative political views private.

"I appreciated that NBC wanted to protect its most prized property, which was Sunday Night Football, and that they didn't want to bring controversy to it. I understood that," she shared with Fox News Digital in March 2022.

She continued, "If I was going to go and tweet and post and all the things that were germinating in my mind, that probably would have brought controversy."

A Shift in Perspective

Following Super Bowl LVI in 2022, Tafoya departed NBC with a mission to "try to be part of the solution and not part of the problem." She recognized that numerous individuals sharing similar viewpoints were remaining silent due to concerns about potential backlash.

"I can't tell you how many people tell me, 'I'm just shutting my mouth, I don't wanna get in trouble,' she said. "Getting in trouble for something you believe in the United States of America? That is astonishing and scary.

"I'm not afraid of many things, but that people feel afraid to speak, or share their beliefs, because there might be ramifications at their place of work, or within their social circles. That scares the hell out of me and I will fight that every step of the way for both sides."

Political Engagement

All the divisions in this country are factored into Tafoya's desire to try to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. She expressed a wish to get involved politically, socially, and in public service.

"I wanted to change my direction. If I wanted to stay in sports television, I'd still be at NBC Sports," she added.

After stepping away from sports broadcasting, Tafoya launched her own podcast where she weighs in on various political subjects. The 60-year-old also served as co-chair for Kendall Qualls' Republican gubernatorial campaign in Minnesota.
