Minneapolis City Council Member Emily Koski has shared a deeply personal and sobering account of the challenges she has faced over the past two years. She revealed that she has been "the target of escalating harassment," which ultimately led to her decision to step away from city politics. This revelation sheds light on the emotional and psychological toll that harassment can take, especially for those in the public eye.

In her Ward 11 newsletter, Koski described the impact of the harassment on herself and her loved ones. She mentioned that they have been living with stress, anxiety, and an unshakeable sense of being unsafe due to the actions of an unnamed man. This individual now faces a restraining order against him, but the effects of the harassment continue to linger.

Koski detailed how the harassment began as interruptions and disruptions that were unsettling but manageable. Over time, these incidents escalated into more aggressive behavior, including yelling, outbursts, and hostile messages. The situation eventually progressed to invasive actions such as following her and her staff, even to their cars. Vandalism and physical intimidation followed, marking a significant shift in the nature of the harassment.

"Each incident chipped away at the sense of safety I once felt," she said. This sentiment reflects the cumulative effect of constant fear and uncertainty, which can be overwhelming for anyone, regardless of their position.

Koski ran for mayor of Minneapolis for several months before this year's election but dropped out in April without much explanation. She is currently completing her second and final term on the Minneapolis City Council. During the process of obtaining a restraining order, she and her staff found themselves withdrawing from the public sphere. "I stopped showing up in the way I once had, not because I wanted to, but because it became the only way to keep residents, my staff, and myself safe," she explained.

Despite the recently awarded restraining order, Koski emphasized that she and her staff still live in fear. They worry about potential retaliation and whether the order will truly bring an end to the harassment. She described the toll this experience has taken, including exhaustion from constantly looking over their shoulders and the burden of questioning whether they are putting themselves or others at risk every time they enter a public space.

The trauma of reliving these incidents through testimony and evidence is also a heavy weight to carry. Koski clarified that she is sharing her experience to be transparent, not to cause alarm or seek sympathy. She wants to explain why public meetings ceased to happen, why gatherings shifted from open forums to private conversations, and why her platform of community presence changed so drastically.

Koski provided details about the lengthy process of addressing the harassment, noting that she cannot fathom how difficult it must be for other victims who do not have the resources available to her as a city official. She emphasized that this is not just her story but the story of many others who face harassment in public life. Several of her current colleagues are managing similar experiences, highlighting the broader issue of normalization of harassment in politics.

"This is not just my story. It is the story of others who have faced harassment in public life. Sadly, several of my current colleagues are managing similar experiences. It is a sobering reminder that harassment, intimidation, and threats are being normalized in our politics. And unless we confront this reality, good people will continue to be driven out of public service, silenced, or harmed."

Koski concluded by expressing her hope that together, they can insist that representation should not come with the price of fear and that public service should not require trauma. Her message is a call to action for society to address the issues of harassment and ensure that public service remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.
