Key Developments in the World Darts Championship

Gerwyn Price advanced to the second round of the World Darts Championship, while Raymond van Barneveld faced an unexpected loss as the tournament continued at Alexandra Palace. The Czech player Adam Gawlas was no match for the 2021 champion, who easily won his first match on Tuesday.

Luke Littler started his title defense with a comfortable victory over Lithuanian player Darius Labanauskas on Thursday. Luke Humphries followed up with a strong win against Ted Evetts on Saturday, and Stephen Bunting narrowly made it through after a challenging first-round match against Sebastian Bialecki.

Van Barneveld, a five-time world champion and former world No.1, suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Stefan Bellmont in his opening match, marking a surprising early exit from the competition. Meanwhile, popular German player Martin Schindler successfully advanced past Stephen Burton in his first-round encounter.

After defeating Michael van Gerwen in the final in 2025, Littler is aiming to become only the fourth player in history to win the sport’s most prestigious event in consecutive years. He would be the first since Gary Anderson in 2016. The 2026 World Darts Championship features an expanded field of 128 players competing for the Sid Waddell Trophy and a £1 million prize.

Littler recently claimed the world No.1 ranking and is considered the favorite for another major title this year. He has already secured victories in the UK Open, World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship.
