Woman Injured by Camel During Church Christmas Play
A Shocking Incident During a Christmas Performance
A recent incident at a Houston-area megachurch has sparked widespread discussion after a woman was hospitalized when she was kicked in the face by a camel during a live Christmas presentation. The event took place during the annual “Christmas Spectacular” at Champion Forest Baptist Church, a production known for its Broadway-style performances and live animals as part of the nativity story.
The shocking moment occurred when a camel, led down the aisle by a man as part of the show, struck the woman with its hind leg. Video footage shared on Facebook by Grizzy’s Hood News captured the incident, with the commentator expressing concern over the severity of the situation. “This could’ve been very deadly y’all,” Grizzy said in a comment on the post.
Champion Forest Baptist Church released a statement to The Independent, expressing regret over the incident. “Champion Forest regrets that this happened. Our team responded immediately, and emergency services were engaged,” the spokesperson said. According to updates from Grizzy's Hood News, the woman was treated at a hospital and released, though her injuries were not disclosed. The church has since stopped allowing animals to move through audience seating for the remainder of the shows and has remained in contact with her family.
A Large-Scale Holiday Production
The six-day Christmas production, which concluded on Sunday, is marketed as Houston’s largest holiday show and a retelling of the birth of Jesus Christ. Last year, about 30,000 people attended the 90-minute performance, according to church officials. Champion Forest Baptist Church, a multi-site megachurch with roughly 7,000 weekly attendees, is known for its large-scale holiday productions. Similar events take place at other Texas megachurches, such as Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, which features acrobatics, live animals, and elaborate staging.
While these productions draw large crowds, they have also faced criticism for being overly flashy. Some argue that the focus on spectacle may overshadow the religious message of the event.
Public Reaction and Concerns
Facebook users had mixed reactions to the incident and the overall production. One supporter expressed sadness over the injury but praised the event. “I’m so sad that this lady was injured during a performance and praying she recovers quickly. My family has enjoyed attending the Christmas Spectacular for many many years and it is always a wonderful experience for our entire family, young and old,” they wrote. They added, “We appreciate all that Champion Forest Baptist does for our community and sincerely hope they continue this Christmas tradition for many more years.”
However, others raised concerns about the cost of the production and the safety of using animals in such settings. “This church is always spending lavishly. Which is the complete opposite of what Jesus taught,” one person wrote. Another commented, “Just a thought, but I feel like the better option would be to use all of that money spent on that show (which would probably be a lot) to feed the needy/give back to the community for the holidays. Just me.”
Some users also questioned the decision to walk animals through a crowded church. “People forget these are animals,” one person said. “Who thought it was a good idea to walk them down the aisles of a church? I went once, and the animals came in from backstage. I’m personally not a fan of using animals for entertainment or shows, but at least they were in and out quickly—not paraded around a building packed with people.”
