The New CLA Hybrid Isn't as German as Mercedes Hopes

The CLA 220 hybrid is equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged engine configuration. This model combines an internal combustion engine with a 1.3 kWh battery and electric motor, delivering a total of 208 horsepower and capable of reaching 60 mph in 7.1 seconds.
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new variant to its CLA lineup, but this one stands out from the rest. Not only is it a hybrid, but it also features an engine that isn’t manufactured by Mercedes itself. Instead, it is sourced from China, marking a significant shift in the automotive landscape. The new CLA 220 hybrid was recently announced, and while it visually resembles the all-electric CLA models already on the market, its powertrain is unique.
Under the hood, the CLA 220 hybrid is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an unusually high compression ratio of 12:1. Although Mercedes claims to have "developed" this engine, it's worth noting that the engine was co-developed with Geely. According to reports from China’s IThome, the engine will not only be designed with Chinese input but will also be manufactured in China before being shipped to Mercedes for integration into the vehicle.

Despite its compact size, the 1.5-liter engine utilizes the Miller cycle combustion process, which is known for improving efficiency. It features an all-aluminum crankcase and a Nanoslide coating on the cylinder liners, designed to reduce friction and enhance durability. To ensure a quieter driving experience, Mercedes has added extra bulkhead insulation around the engine bay, including along the A-pillars and under the floor.
How Does It Perform?

The engine works in conjunction with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, as well as a 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack with 1.3 kWh of capacity. This setup allows the CLA 220 hybrid to operate solely on electric power at speeds up to 60 mph (96 km/h). Additionally, it can recover up to 25 kW during braking, further enhancing its efficiency.
In terms of performance, the CLA 220 hybrid produces 208 horsepower and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque. Mercedes states that it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h). The vehicle weighs 3,594 lbs (1,630 kg), making it a balanced blend of performance and efficiency.
A Familiar Cabin

Inside the CLA 220 hybrid, all models come standard with a one-piece fixed panoramic glass roof. Customers can also choose to add Mercedes-Benz’s Superscreen, which combines a 10.25-inch display, a 14-inch infotainment screen, and a 14-inch front passenger display. While these features are impressive, they may not be the main attraction for most buyers.
The CLA 220 hybrid introduces a revised steering wheel design. At first glance, it appears similar to the steering wheels found in other CLA models or across the Mercedes lineup. However, there are subtle changes that set it apart. Most of the haptic touch points remain, but like the latest GLC EV, it now includes a new rocker switch for cruise control and a physical roller for volume, replacing their previously touch-sensitive counterparts.
