Susie Wiles Shines in the Spotlight After Vanity Fair's Comments

White House chief of staff Susie Wiles has found herself at the center of a high-profile controversy after making several notable admissions in interviews with Vanity Fair. The article, which draws on 11 conversations with Wiles over the past year, reveals her candid views on several key figures, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, Vice President JD Vance, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Additionally, it touches on President Trump’s approach to targeting critics and his plans for Venezuela.
Wiles, known for her behind-the-scenes role and the nickname “ice maiden,” has rarely been in the spotlight. However, this recent series of interviews has put her under scrutiny. Despite the controversy, those close to the White House suggest that Wiles is unlikely to be removed from her position. Mick Mulvaney, who previously served as Trump’s acting chief of staff, emphasized that Wiles's job is secure.
“First things first: In no way is her job in danger. All indications are that she is doing a tremendous job, and everyone likes her, including the president. Plus, there doesn’t seem to be anyone angling to get rid of her. So, she absolutely stays as chief. And should,” Mulvaney said.
Mulvaney also expressed concerns about the decision to speak with Vanity Fair, calling it a mistake. He added that while the interviews may not have helped the president, they were not severe enough to jeopardize Wiles's position.
Wiles’s influence within the White House is evident, as officials quickly rallied to defend her. Even those she criticized in the article, such as Vance and Bondi, came to her support. Vance, whom Wiles described as “a conspiracy theorist for a decade,” praised her integrity. Bondi, who Wiles mentioned had “whiffed” in handling the Jeffrey Epstein documents, called her a “dear friend.”
Trump, who has not read the article, commended Wiles for her work. He also did not disagree with her description of him as having “an alcoholic’s personality.” During his first term, Trump had a turbulent relationship with his chiefs of staff, often clashing with their attempts to manage his impulses.
Wiles, however, has built a strong rapport with Trump. She worked on his 2016 campaign and led efforts to win Florida. She also managed his 2024 operation during a challenging period. Within the White House, she is known for managing the diverse personalities around Trump and choosing her battles wisely.
Donald Trump Jr. highlighted her qualifications, stating that no one is more suited to serve as chief of staff than Wiles.
Wiles’s comments to Vanity Fair sparked significant attention in Washington. She described Musk as an “odd, odd duck” and “avowed ketamine” user, criticizing his approach to dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development. She also mentioned a “loose agreement” with Trump about moving on from settling scores after 90 days in office and acknowledged his push to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James.
She also discussed disagreements over Trump’s tariff rollout and his plan for Venezuela, which involved targeting drug boats until Maduro “cries uncle.”
The article prompted Wiles to address it directly on X, calling it a “disingenuously framed hit piece” that lacked “significant context.” She suggested the piece aimed to portray the president and his team in a negative light.
The White House responded by coordinating a defense of Wiles, with Cabinet officials praising her and accusing Vanity Fair of diverting attention from the president’s agenda. Despite this, Wiles was among several top officials who participated in a photo shoot with the outlet and spoke with author Chris Whipple.
Leavitt, the press secretary, pointed to the support Wiles received from within the White House and on Capitol Hill. She emphasized that Wiles’s leadership was crucial to Trump’s ability to accomplish his goals.
