Recently, Ellingson Motorcars made headlines by selling a replica of the Mutts Cutts van from the movie "Dumb and Dumber." This unique vehicle, covered in carpet to resemble a rolling dog, is just one example of the eclectic collection that can be found at the dealership.

One notable feature is a 1930 Ford Model A mounted on a pole 30 feet above the ground. This unusual display serves as both a local landmark and a symbol of the treasures that lie within the dealership.

Owner Scott Ellingson describes the car as a curiosity that sparks questions from drivers on Interstate 94. “It’s not quite like Babe The Blue Ox or anything, but when people drive by, the curiosity is what is that really all about,” he says.

Inside the dealership, the collection of vintage motor vehicles is extensive. But Ellingson isn't just focused on classic cars from the past. He has a particular interest in “orphan cars”—vehicles that are rare or less commonly seen.

A Family Passion

Ellingson's passion for antique automobiles runs in the family. He recalls being exposed to cars since he was a child. The business started over 30 years ago as a museum for his father's collection, and it has since evolved into a thriving dealership.

Today, the dealership houses more than 100 collector cars at any given time, many of which look like they were frozen in time. Every vehicle that comes into the dealership must first pass basic tests: it must run, drive, and stop. Only after passing these inspections does it move on to further restoration or preparation for sale.

Unusual and Unique Vehicles

The collection at Ellingson Motorcars includes some truly unique pieces. There's a replica of the Batmobile from the 1960s Batman TV show, a Fiat from the 1950s that would be perfect for a yacht, and even a Good Humor ice cream truck that could bring a smile to any car collector's face.

Ellingson also mentions other notable vehicles in the inventory, such as a Dukes of Hazzard car and a Rolls Royce once owned by Barry Manilow. Additionally, there's a Mustang that belonged to Conway Twitty, adding to the variety of vehicles available.

One of the most unusual items in the collection is the Mutts Cutts van replica. This car sold quickly to a collector in Florida, highlighting the demand for unique and nostalgic vehicles.

The Stories Behind the Cars

For Ellingson, the appeal of classic cars goes beyond their mechanical value. Each vehicle comes with a story, and he enjoys hearing the tales that accompany them. “Everybody that comes in has a story about cars,” he says. Whether it's about a grandpa's car, a dad's first new car, or a personal milestone, the stories add depth to the collection.

Ellingson has no plans to retire anytime soon. “If you love what you do, it's not really going to work. I guess I'm gonna do it as long as I can,” he says.
