Rob and Michele Reiner's Enduring Legacy in LGBTQ Advocacy
Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, known for their contributions to the entertainment industry, also left a significant legacy in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Their efforts played a crucial role in advancing the cause of marriage equality and other related issues.
The Human Rights Campaign, an organization dedicated to LGBTQ advocacy, released a statement following the tragic deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner. The statement highlighted their pivotal role in organizing peers, bringing together strategists and legal experts, and contributing to landmark Supreme Court decisions that ultimately made marriage equality the law of the land.
Reiner and his wife co-founded the American Foundation For Equal Rights, which was instrumental in challenging California’s Proposition 8, a 2008 ballot initiative that sought to ban same-sex marriage. The foundation enlisted the services of Ted Olson and David Boies, two attorneys who had previously been on opposing sides in the Bush v. Gore case. Their legal challenge led to a district court and appeals court overturning Proposition 8. The Supreme Court later dismissed an appeal, questioning the standing of the defendants involved in the case.
This legal battle included a “first-of-its-kind trial” on the constitutional right to same-sex marriage, which laid the groundwork for the Obergefell v. Hodges case in 2015. According to Deadline, this case marked a significant milestone in the fight for marriage equality.
California Governor Gavin Newsom acknowledged Rob Reiner's support for his decision to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004, despite resistance from some members of his party. In a 2015 essay for Variety, Reiner expressed optimism about the future of LGBTQ rights, stating, "It’s so heartening to think young people don’t think twice about gay marriage. And I think it’s going to be the same with the transgender community. It’s going to get closer and closer to the ideal that we are all one."
Kris Perry, one of the plaintiffs in the Proposition 8 court case, emphasized the deep commitment of both Reiners to these causes. She told Politico, "You couldn’t distinguish them. They were so invested together."
Beyond their work in LGBTQ rights, Rob Reiner was also a strong advocate for early childhood development policies. He spearheaded the push for California’s Proposition 10, which taxed tobacco products to fund programs aimed at improving access to preschool and teacher training. This initiative helped establish the state's "First 5" program.
In 2006, Reiner supported another ballot initiative called Proposition 82, which aimed to tax the wealthy to fund universal preschool. Although this effort did not succeed, it reflected his ongoing commitment to children's welfare.
Reiner's involvement in policy also sparked speculation about a potential run for California governor against Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006. The proposed contest, dubbed "Meathead vs. Terminator," referenced the characters they played in the past. However, Reiner ultimately decided not to pursue the bid, choosing instead to focus on his family.
The Reiners were major contributors to Democratic candidates over the years, donating a total of $2.7 million to various campaigns. This included support for former President Joe Biden’s 2024 re-election bid and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign.
In addition to his political activism, Rob Reiner was a vocal critic of Donald Trump. His criticism of the president led to an inflammatory post from Trump regarding the couple's deaths. During an appearance on MSNBC in October, Reiner warned that the country was slipping into "autocracy" under Trump and urged Hollywood figures to speak out against his attacks on free speech.
