Right Wing Trolls Blame Trans People for Rob Reiner's Death – One Major Flaw

The tragic events that unfolded over the weekend in Hollywood have left many reeling, as it was revealed that Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner, were victims of a violent act committed by their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner. Now in custody, Nick has long struggled with addiction, and according to friends, the Reiners had expressed concerns about their son's mental health and potential relapse in the months leading up to the incident.
Nick had a history of cycling in and out of rehab programs throughout his life, and tensions between him and his parents reached a boiling point at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Sunday night. The conflict centered around Nick's desire to detox at home versus his parents' insistence that he attend rehab—a recurring issue that had plagued the family for years.
The confrontation turned deadly, leaving behind a heartbreaking tragedy that no one could have foreseen. It is impossible to determine whether any actions could have been taken to prevent this outcome, but the loss of two beloved individuals has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and beyond.

Here’s the other thing… Contrary to a popular right-wing rumor that has circulated since the murder, Nick Reiner is not transgender or in the process of transitioning. To our knowledge, his struggles have never been linked to any discomfort with his assigned gender at birth. However, it is clear why certain bad faith actors would want to spread such misinformation.
After Rob Reiner’s death, tributes poured in from Hollywood power players, close friends, and LGBTQ+ organizations who recognized his lifelong commitment to supporting gay rights, especially in the fight for marriage equality. Reiner was a powerful advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, and if any of his children had been transgender, there is no plausible scenario where he would have reacted with anything other than empathy and understanding. Considering how Reiner and his wife approached their son’s struggles with drug use and mental health, and given his vocal opposition to the Trump administration, it is safe to say that if Nick had been transgender, he would have received full support from his parents, and this situation would not have led to a rift in the family.
Unfortunately, the false rumor that surfaced online suggested that Nick was in the middle of a transition and that his "hormone-filled" body was the reason for the Reiners’ deaths. Snopes traced the origin of this rumor to a Facebook account belonging to a self-described comedian named Jonathan Gregory, who also claimed to be a "Digital Content Creator for the Trump Administration" working at Newsmax, a conservative media outlet.
It remains unclear whether this rumor was created to gain attention in an AI-driven news cycle or as part of a deliberate effort to link trans people with random acts of violence. What is clear, however, is how the former president responded to Reiner’s death—attempting to imply that Reiner’s activism and liberal politics were somehow responsible for his untimely passing.
The broader purpose of blaming every tragedy on trans people is to convince others that “life would be better if we just got rid of all the trans people.” This kind of rhetoric is not only harmful but also deeply disrespectful to the legacy of an artist like Rob Reiner, who spent his life welcoming queer people into his world, both in his storytelling and in his vision for a more inclusive society.
This year has seen a troubling rise in right-wing attempts to blame every act of violence on trans individuals, despite a lack of evidence. By falsely linking Nick Reiner’s mental health issues to his gender identity, those spreading these rumors are not only insulting the trans community but also undermining the legacy of a man who stood firmly in support of LGBTQ+ rights.
