Oops, the Patent Office Just Unveiled Chevy's Game-Changing New Truck

The Unexpected Leak: A Glimpse into the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado

When it comes to sifting through patents, most of them are dull and uneventful. However, every so often, a patent emerges that has the potential to completely disrupt a company’s product planning cycle. For automakers, vehicle launches and reveals are meticulously planned months in advance to maximize impact and attract attention. But sometimes, a patent drawing can spoil all the suspense by revealing designs, products, or new features before the manufacturer is ready.

This seems to be exactly what happened with the upcoming 2027 Chevrolet Silverado. A patent filed on December 9th was uncovered and appears to show the design of the truck in full view. While there are no actual photographs, the drawings depict the fascias, proportions, and overall body of the vehicle. What makes this particular patent interesting is that it includes drawings from every angle, giving everyone a pretty clear idea of what the truck will look like, even though it hasn’t been officially leaked.

How Legit Is This?

The patent was filed by General Motors, which confirms that it is at least an official Chevy design. The patent describes the drawings as “a vehicle, toy replica, and/or other replica” showing a “new design,” but it doesn’t specify the year, make, or model. I reached out to Chevrolet to see if they would confirm whether this is indeed the new Silverado, and a representative provided the following statement:

"GM regularly files with the US Patent Office to protect our IP, trademark, and technologies. Filings are not always indicative of future product. We cannot comment on speciation on future product."

Clearly, Chevrolet wasn’t going to confirm whether this is the next version of its most important truck. However, designs that are this production-intent usually don’t get patented unless they’re intended for market. So, while it’s not confirmed, it’s highly likely that this is the 2027 Silverado.

You Want Lights? You Got ‘Em

Huge headlights have become a trend among American pickup trucks. The current Ford F-150 features headlight assemblies that are almost as big as a person's torso. Chevrolet has also embraced this trend with its current Silverado HD, which has headlights over two feet wide. These lights might seem large until you see them off the car, where their size becomes more apparent.

Based on these drawings, it looks like Chevrolet is continuing with the big headlight style for the standard Silverado 1500 in 2027. Like many new cars from Chevrolet, there are thin light strips at the top of the bumper area on either side of the grille, with a larger cluster below for the main lamps. It also appears there may be a central light strip running between the assemblies, bisected by a massive Chevy logo.

The rest of the front end retains the general shape of the outgoing Silverado, but with more design elements in the lower section to break up the massive frontal area. There is space for active safety technology and possibly fog lights. The hood features a more prominent version of the two-hump shape found on the current truck.

As for the rest of the design, it closely resembles other trucks in the segment. This is expected—Chevrolet isn’t likely to take a huge risk by drastically changing what its customers know and love. The bed and four doors maintain the classic pickup shape that should be familiar to everyone.

The Big Question: What About the Cabin?

The biggest unknown remains the cabin. Spy shots published earlier this year by Car and Driver show an absolutely massive screen occupying most of the dashboard, which is a significant departure from the current setup. Big screens are now common in vehicles across the segment, so this isn’t entirely surprising.

When Will This Thing Actually Come Out?

The current Silverado has been on the market since 2019, meaning it’s due for a major update. Combined with the fact that prototypes have been spotted throughout the year and the timing of this patent submission, I suspect Chevrolet will unveil the 2027 model by springtime.

According to Car and Driver, there shouldn’t be any major changes to the powertrain department. Currently, the Silverado offers two gas-powered V8s, an entry-level four-cylinder, and a Duramax turbo-diesel straight-six.

As for pricing, the current Silverado starts at $38,145 for the most basic, stripped-out, four-cylinder Work Truck trim. With a heavy update or a totally new vehicle arriving, expect the price to increase by at least a few thousand dollars.
