Mac McAnally's 2026 Vegas Countdown Tour

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As the nation prepares for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebrations, one of the standout performers in Nexstar’s Coast to Coast Countdown to 2026 is a name that resonates deeply within the country music scene. Mac McAnally, a celebrated country music artist and accomplished songwriter, has long been a familiar face among parrotheads—devoted fans of the legendary Jimmy Buffett.

With ten awards from the Country Music Association as Musician of the Year, McAnally has built a career that spans decades. His songwriting talents have left an indelible mark on the industry, with his work featured in songs for artists such as Alabama, Shenandoah, George Strait, and Kenny Chesney. But perhaps his most notable connection is with Jimmy Buffett, whose iconic style and storytelling have influenced McAnally's own creative journey.

A Storyteller’s Journey

McAnally, who describes himself as a “country boy from Mississippi,” has always had a knack for storytelling. As a teenager, he began writing short stories that eventually found their way into songs that touched the hearts of listeners. His early efforts led to the creation of a singer-songwriter album, which caught the attention of someone who would later become a pivotal figure in his career.

“I made a little singer-songwriter album when I was still a teenager, and the same guy that gave me the record deal was the guy that had given Jimmy [Buffett] his first record deal, maybe eight or 10 years before that. And he sent Jimmy a copy of my first album and said, ‘This kid is a storyteller like you.’”

That moment marked the beginning of a lifelong friendship and musical partnership between McAnally and Buffett. Their collaboration not only shaped McAnally’s career but also allowed him to experience a world he never imagined possible.

Traveling the World with a Legend

McAnally recalls how his journey with Buffett opened up new horizons. “I hit the road with Jimmy, and I’ve gotten to travel the world and see things that I never would have seen if it weren’t for his well-chosen ambition. He was great at being an ambitious superstar. And he was also a generous superstar in that he took all of us with him on that plane, and we stayed in super nice hotels with him, and we saw things that we would never have seen without him.”

This generosity extended beyond just travel; it was a reflection of Buffett’s character and the kind of person he was. McAnally often speaks about how Buffett’s influence helped shape not only his music but also his perspective on life.

A Memorable Encounter

One of the most unforgettable moments in McAnally’s career came during a performance in Sunset Cove in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 2023. It was during this show that Buffett made an impromptu appearance, marking what would be his last performance on stage.

This unexpected moment was a fitting tribute to the bond they shared and the impact Buffett had on McAnally’s life and career. It served as a reminder of the legacy they both built together over the years.

“If you want to role model … he left all of this, all of this human joy music, and his whole life was just a big smile, wider than his head that spread to everybody else like a virus. And, I’m not as good at that as he was, but I have some of that to spread still, and I’m doing, you know, a junior minor league version of what he did.”

McAnally is looking forward to spreading some joy on the New Year’s Eve show. He said Las Vegas is a one-of-a-kind place. His first visit—decades ago—was to meet Wayne Newton.

“And that was my first trip to Vegas … it was really glamorous and spoiled, and I was wearing hand-me-down overalls from my grandfather. I had sort of a Scottish afro because we didn’t know about conditioner in North Mississippi. And I’m in Las Vegas, and Wayne was just taking a scoop of Solo Cup full of hundred-dollar chips and saying, here we go, play.”

McAnally continues to perform at many of the same venues where Buffett played, honoring his legacy and spreading smiles through music.
