Hugh Jackman: Wolverine's Story Isn't Finished

Hugh Jackman has not ruled out the possibility of returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Wolverine, despite his previous statements about retiring from the role. During a recent appearance on The View, the actor hinted that his time with the character might not be over yet.

Sunny Hostin, a host on The View, asked Jackman if his recent comments about not feeling like the end for the character were a hint that he might appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Jackman quickly dismissed the idea, saying, “That’s not a clue.” He then made a dramatic gesture by covering his face with his hands and adding, “Watch my face. Try to work this out. No.”

Despite this, Jackman admitted that it "just doesn't" feel like the end of the road for his character Logan after officially transitioning from the 20th Century Fox era of superhero films into the MCU in the 2024 hit Deadpool & Wolverine.

“I was like, 'I'm done' for five years,” Jackman explained. “And Ryan Reynolds would ring me a lot like, 'Come on!' I'm like, 'No.’ And then I rang him one day and said, 'I'm in.’” He added, “And so I go with this — and that's what my gut says — it's not done. But that's just me! Marvel might have different ideas.”

Jackman’s comments come at a time when there is growing speculation about his potential return to the MCU. In August, Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, appeared to tease his involvement in Doomsday by posting an Instagram photo featuring a red anarchy symbol graffitied over the Avengers logo.

If Jackman does return, he won’t be the only X-Men character making an appearance. Many of his fellow cast members, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, are confirmed to star in the next Avengers film. Channing Tatum, who finally brought his version of Gambit to life in Deadpool & Wolverine, is also set to appear in Doomsday.

The star-studded cast of Avengers: Doomsday includes Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Wyatt Russell, and more.

Jackman has played Logan/Wolverine in 10 different X-Men films over the past 25 years. Although it seemed like the character’s fate was sealed at the end of Logan in 2017, Jackman has since hinted that he may return to the role again.

“I am never saying 'never' ever again,” Jackman said during a November appearance on The Graham Norton Show. “I did mean it when I said 'never,' until the day when I changed my mind. But I really did for quite a few years, I meant it.”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release in theaters on December 18, 2026, whether or not Jackman returns to the role.
