Growth of The Game Awards

The Game Awards continues to grow in popularity each year, becoming a significant event in the video-game industry. Since its inception in 2014, the annual celebration of gaming excellence has seen a massive increase in viewership. Initially, it attracted 1.9 million livestreams. However, by 2025, the show broke records with an estimated 171 million global livestreams for the full broadcast, marking an 11% increase from the previous year's 154 million.

This growth is not limited to just the full broadcast. Viewership numbers also include streams across multiple digital networks such as YouTube, Twitch, Steam, TikTok Live, X, Kick, Facebook, and Instagram Live, as well as platforms in China and JioHotstar in India. According to StreamCharts, the combined peak concurrent viewers on Twitch and YouTube reached 4.4 million, up 9% compared to the previous year.

Breakdown of Streaming Platforms

YouTube saw a notable increase in peak concurrent streams, with the 4K Game Awards feed reaching nearly 1.4 million, an 8% rise from the previous year. Overall, TGA on YouTube had over 2.4 million peak concurrent streams, a 9% increase. Additionally, more than 8,600 channels co-streamed the show on YouTube, setting a new record.

On Twitch, over 1.8 million peak concurrent users watched TGA 2025. The total unique viewers increased by 5% year over year, and hours watched also rose by 5%. Co-streaming on Twitch saw a record number of creators sharing the show, with 16,500 creators participating—up 50% from the previous year.

X also reported a significant increase in engagement. Posts about the Game Awards rose by 12% year over year to over 1.79 million between December 10-12. There were over 60 million video views on X, covering the official broadcast and related videos. Authenticated viewer voting for The Game Awards increased by over 10% from 2024 to more than 123 million, including the Players' Voice award.

Global Reach and Distribution

Globally, The Game Awards achieved its biggest ever results, with live distribution in China on a record number of platforms. These included Bilbili, Huya, Weibo, WeChat, Douyin, Zhihu, DouYu, Baidu, TapTap, XiaoHongShu, QQ, Kuishou, YouKu, RED, and HeyBox. In South Korea, distribution was available on CHZZK and Soop, while in Japan, it was on NicoNico.

Highlights of the 2025 Show

The 2025 Game Awards were held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 11. The top honor went to "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" by Sandfall Interactive and Kepler Interactive, which received the Game of the Year award. The title also won awards for game direction, narrative, art direction, score and music, performance, best independent game, best debut indie game, and best RPG.

The show featured a special live musical performance by Evanescence, who performed "Afterlife" from Netflix's animated series "Devil May Cry." The cast of Paramount Pictures' upcoming film "Street Fighter" presented the award for best ongoing game, which was won by Hello Games' "No Man's Sky."

The 2025 Game Awards featured a host of big names in games and entertainment as presenters, including Dan Houser, David Harbour, Elijah Wright, Felicia Day, Gemma Chan, J.J. Abrams, Jeffrey Wright, Lenny Kravitz, Maggie Robertson, Megan Everett, Mike Booth, Milla Jovovich, Miss Piggy, Neil Newbon, Nicolas Doucet, Rahul Kohli, Rebecca Ford, Rowlf, Todd Howard, and Tricia Helfer. The Game Awards Orchestra's "Game of the Year" medley, composed by Lorne Balfe, featured music from this year's slate of Game of the Year nominees.

The Game Awards also revealed a first look at upcoming games and entertainment properties, including "007 First Light" (IO Interactive), "4:LOOP" (Bad Robot Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment), "Invincible VS" (Skybound Entertainment), "Out of Words" (Kong Orange, WiredFly, and Morten Søndergaard in partnership with Epic Games Publishing), "Resident Evil: Requiem" (Capcom), "Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic" (Arcanaut Studios), "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" (Universal Pictures), "Tomb Raider: Catalyst" and "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis" (Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics), and "Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons" (Invoke Studios and Wizards of the Coast).
