Coroner Reveals Cause of Death for Rob Reiner and Wife Michele
The tragic deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, have sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and their personal circle. The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, marking a devastating end to their lives. Authorities have officially confirmed that both individuals died from multiple sharp force injuries, with the manner of death classified as homicide. The location of their passing was their residence in Brentwood, Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office, both Rob and Michele passed away on Sunday, December 14, after being last seen alive on the evening of December 13. Their daughter, Romy, discovered her father’s body when she entered their house on Sunday, which led to her roommate calling 911. Upon arrival, authorities found Michele’s body at the scene.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) released a statement on Monday confirming that the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was responsible for their deaths. He was arrested around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday in the Exposition Park area of Los Angeles and taken into custody around 5 a.m. on Monday. According to officials, Nick did not resist arrest.
On Tuesday, Nick Reiner was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. He also faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon—a knife. If convicted, Nick could face life in state prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Nick appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday morning, where he briefly spoke to confirm he consented to waiving his right to a speedy arraignment. His attorneys did not enter a plea during the appearance, and the judge ordered that the defendant be held without bail until his arraignment, which is scheduled for January 7, 2026.
Romy and her brother, Jake Reiner, shared a heartfelt statement mourning their parents on Wednesday. “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” the siblings said in a statement to PEOPLE. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends.”
They continued, “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
Rob and Michele Reiner’s eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, who was adopted during Rob’s prior marriage to the late Penny Marshall, previously spoke out about his death. “I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
A group of Rob and Michele Reiner’s closest friends and associates shared a joint statement memorializing the late filmmaker and actor on Tuesday. “They were a special force together—dynamic, unselfish and inspiring,” the statement said. “We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”
The statement was signed by When Harry Met Sally star Billy Crystal and his wife Janice; Albert and Kimberly Brooks (whose life Reiner chronicled in his 2023 documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life); Spinal Tap Reunion actor Martin Short; North screenwriter Alan Zweibel and his wife Robin; Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David and his wife Ashley Underwood; When Harry Met Sally composer Marc Shaiman and his husband Lou Mirabal; filmmaker Barry Levinson and his wife Diana; and Ambassador James Costos and his partner Michael Smith.
Others who have shared their own tributes to the Reiners include Misery actress Kathy Bates, The Princess Bride star Mandy Patinkin, Stand By Me actor Jerry O’Connell, Ghosts of Mississippi star James Woods, and A Few Good Men actor Kevin Bacon.
