Billy Crystal Honors Late Friend Rob Reiner in Emotional Tribute

A Heartfelt Tribute to a Hollywood Legend

Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice Crystal, joined a group of Hollywood’s most notable figures in expressing their deep sorrow over the passing of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. In a heartfelt statement, they honored the late filmmaker, calling him “a great comic actor” and “a master story teller.” The tribute was shared with the Associated Press and included the voices of several other celebrities, such as Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry and Diana Levinson, and Ambassador James Costos and Michael Smith.

The statement began by reflecting on the magic of cinema: “Going to the movies in a dark theater filled with strangers having a common experience, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, or watching an intense drama unfold is still an unforgettable thrill. Tell us a story audiences demand of us.”

Rob Reiner’s legacy as a storyteller was highlighted in the tribute, emphasizing how he absorbed lessons from his father, Carl, and mentor, Norman Lear. “He not only was a great comic actor, he became a master story teller,” the statement said. “There is no other director who has his range. From comedy to drama to ‘mockumentary’ to documentary, he was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films.”

His comedic talent and attention to detail were also praised: “His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant.” The tribute continued by highlighting how he treated actors and writers with respect, creating a collaborative environment that made filmmaking a privilege.

“His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.”

Beyond his professional achievements, the statement also recognized Rob’s commitment to his country. “Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better and with his loving wife Michele, he had the perfect partner. Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens… They were a special force together—dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”

The tribute ended with a quote from one of Rob’s favorite films, It’s a Wonderful Life: “Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” The statement concluded, “You have no idea.”

Billy Crystal, who starred in the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally, directed by Reiner, was among those who expressed their grief. As reported by Page Six, the Hollywood icon and his wife were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14. Rob was 78, and Michele was 70.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the family told Variety in a statement. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

According to sources, Rob and Michele were found with their throats slit open. Their son, Nick, 32, was arrested on charges of murder in his parents’ deaths and has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder as of Tuesday afternoon.
