Actors Who Rose to Fame on 'Friday Night Lights'

A Nostalgic Reunion

In early December, fans of the teen sports drama Friday Night Lights were thrilled when a teaser was released for an upcoming Actors on Actors conversation featuring two of the show’s most memorable alumni: Michael B. Jordan and Jesse Plemons. The sit-down, which took place on Saturday, Dec. 13, brought the former co-stars back to the fictional town of Dillon, Texas, where they first made their mark. Diehard fans have been celebrating the reunion with enthusiasm.

On the set of the Variety interview, Jordan and Plemons greeted each other warmly. Despite not seeing each other in years, they immediately fell into familiar conversations as if they had just caught up over coffee. Plemons shared memories of their time filming, including fun moments like playing basketball at a 24-Hour Fitness gym as teens.

"You're a sleeper. People don't understand that," Jordan praised his colleague's jump shot with a smile. "You're very athletic, and you got a shot, bro."

Memories from the Set

The conversation soon turned to their days on Friday Night Lights as child actors. Plemons recalled how working on the series felt like “anarchy to a degree” due to the freedom the cast had to shape their characters under the guidance of creator Peter Burg and showrunner Jason Katims. Even as young talent on a major network television show, Plemons felt at liberty to do his own thing.

"Not that acting can always be fun, but that show taught me that really good work can come out of that sense of play and exploration," he said.

Jordan, who joined Friday Night Lights in its fourth season, admitted he initially felt nervous about entering a space that had already been established. Though he had already proven his acting chops on projects like All My Children and The Wire, Friday Night Lights was a different experience entirely. The cast and crew were like a close-knit family, and a cast dinner helped ease his transition.

"At that first cast dinner, where everyone stood up and kind of introduced themselves and kind of welcomed us to the team, all that kind of washed away," Jordan recalled. "You got someone like Kyle Chandler standing up there and talking through the experience of what it's like to work on the show. And you don't quite get it until you show up day one and got a guy like Peter Burg yelling at the camera."

"The idea of always being on and prepared to adapt... I definitely take that with me," he said on the personal impact of the show.

Fan Reactions and New Possibilities

Variety shared more snippets of the reunion on its social media platforms, and Friday Night Lights fans flooded the comments section with nostalgia. One comment read, "I feel a rewatch coming," while others speculated about future collaborations between Jordan and Plemons. Some fans imagined them starring together in a True Detective reboot or a White Man Can’t Jump remake. Given their chemistry, these ideas are not far-fetched.

The Actors on Actors sit-down comes just days after the nominations for the 2026 Golden Globes were announced. Both Jordan and Plemons are up for their big-name projects, marking the start of awards season on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026.

Sinners, the bluesy Ryan Coogler vampire spectacular set in 1930s Mississippi, is nominated in six categories, with Jordan in the race for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. Meanwhile, Plemons is nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for his role in the quirky film Bugonia.

A Lasting Connection

At the end of the interview, Jordan and Plemons were all smiles. Although their paths diverged after the 2011 finale of Friday Night Lights, leading to vastly different professional trajectories, the love and mutual respect between them remain strong.

"Look, man, we can't wait another two decades to do this again," Jordan laughed.

"I know, I know," replied Plemons. "Feels like someone from my high school is out there doing amazing things."

With their movies among the frontrunners for industry insiders and fans alike for the Golden Globes, a reunion might happen sooner than expected.
