Yo La Tengo Honors Rob Reiner with Spinal Tap Cover at Hanukkah Show

A Tribute to Rob Reiner

The indie rock band Yo La Tengo paid a unique tribute to the late Rob Reiner during their annual Hanukkah show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. The group, known for their eclectic style and deep connection to music, turned up the volume in honor of the late filmmaker, who was a significant figure in the world of comedy and film.

As the night progressed, frontman Ira Kaplan, 70, addressed the crowd with a mix of humor and sincerity. He mentioned that the performance would be particularly ragged, not just because of the nature of the show, but also due to the emotional weight of the occasion. “Because we’re gonna salute a Jewish songwriter we were not expecting to be saluting this Hanukkah, and we certainly weren’t expecting to be memorializing him,” he said, setting the tone for the evening.

Following a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Heroin,” Yo La Tengo transitioned into a lively rendition of “Gimme Some Money,” a song made famous by the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap. This choice was a nod to Reiner’s iconic 1984 mockumentary, “This Is Spinal Tap,” which marked his directorial debut. The film featured Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls, and Reiner himself as the documentary filmmaker Marty DiBergi.

Reiner’s final film before his tragic death was a sequel titled “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.” This film brought together the original cast for a one-night-only reunion concert in New Orleans. The sequel featured cameos from real-life music superstars like Paul McCartney and Elton John, highlighting the enduring legacy of the original film.

“I mean, it started out actually slow,” Reiner told Page Six regarding “This Is Spinal Tap” in July. “People didn’t quite get it at first. They thought it was a real documentary about a real band.” The film eventually gained recognition and became a cultural touchstone, even being added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Reiner had always been open about the challenges of creating a sequel. “We were asked many times to do [a sequel], especially after the movie was put in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress and the Oxford English Dictionary put in ‘goes to 11,'” he shared with USA Today. However, he and the team felt they were done with the project until they were reunited with their old friends.

“[Guest] used to call it ‘schneedeling,’ and right away, we were schneedeling as if no time had gone by. You can’t beat that,” Reiner reflected, emphasizing the joy of reuniting with his collaborators.

In the wake of Reiner’s and his wife’s tragic deaths, both Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer released touching statements. Guest and his wife, Jamie Lee Curtis, expressed their shock and sadness over the violent, tragic deaths of their dear friends. “We have lost great friends,” they added, asking for time to grieve.

Shearer described the deaths as “unspeakable” and “the stuff of Greek tragedy.” He highlighted Reiner’s qualities, calling him a friend, collaborator, and a mensch. “He was funny, he was smart, he was a mensch,” Shearer said, recalling the collaborative spirit that defined their work together.

Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found stabbed to death at their home in Brentwood, California, by their 28-year-old daughter, Romy. Their son, Nick, was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of murder. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that Nick would be formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder once he is medically cleared to appear in court.

The Reiner family released an emotional statement expressing their profound sorrow over the tragic passing of Michele and Rob. “We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time,” they concluded, seeking support and understanding during this challenging period.
