White House Defends Susie Wiles Amid Controversial Vanity Fair Article
President Trump and senior members of his administration have come to the defense of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles following a controversial article published by Vanity Fair. The piece, written by author Chris Whipple, includes detailed insights from 11 interviews conducted with Wiles between January 11 and November 5. The article features her candid assessments of the president’s inner circle, his first year in office, and even his personality.
Wiles reportedly described the president as having "an alcoholic's personality," despite the fact that he does not drink. She explained that high-functioning alcoholics or those struggling with addiction often exhibit exaggerated traits when under the influence. “I'm a little bit of an expert in big personalities,” she said, according to the article. She also claimed the president operates under the belief that “nothing he can't do. Nothing, zero, nothing.”
When asked about the article, President Trump stated that he had not read it but praised Wiles, calling her “fantastic.” He also defended her description of him, noting that while he doesn’t drink, he has often joked about how he might be an alcoholic if he did. “I've said that many times about myself. I’m fortunate I'm not a drinker. If I did, I could very well, because I've said that — what's the word? Not possessive — possessive and addictive type personality.”
Wiles' Criticisms of Key Figures
In addition to her comments on the president, Wiles reportedly criticized several other figures within the administration. She called Vice President JD Vance a “conspiracy theorist for a decade” and accused Attorney General Pam Bondi of “completely whiffing” on her handling of the Epstein files. She also criticized Elon Musk and the way the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was shuttered early in the administration.
“No rational person could think the USAID process was a good one,” she said. “Nobody.”
Wiles took to social media to respond to the article, calling it a “disingenuously framed hit piece on me and the finest President, White House staff, and Cabinet in history.” She argued that significant context was ignored and that much of what she and others said about the team was left out. “I assume, after reading it, that this was done to paint an overwhelmingly chaotic and negative narrative about the President and our team,” she wrote.
Despite these criticisms, top administration officials have publicly supported Wiles. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared their statements, emphasizing their confidence in her leadership.
Strong Backing from Administration Officials
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, who Wiles referred to as a “right-wing absolute zealot” in the story, called her “an exceptional chief of staff.” He noted that she has always been an ally in delivering for the president and that the article would not slow them down.
Attorney General Pam Bondi, despite being criticized in the article, responded with strong support for Wiles. She stated, “My dear friend Susie Wiles fights every day to advance President Trump's agenda – and she does so with grace, loyalty, and historic effectiveness.” She added that any attempts to undermine the administration would fail.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called Wiles “the most TRUSTED, most PROFESSIONAL & most EFFECTIVE Chief of Staff of my lifetime,” while Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy echoed similar sentiments, calling the article part of a larger effort by the “radical left” to create discord within the administration.
JD Vance Responds to Conspiracy Theory Claim
Vice President JD Vance was asked about the “conspiracy theorist” comment during a trip to Pennsylvania. He admitted he hadn’t read the article yet but acknowledged hearing about it. He humorously remarked that he sometimes believes in conspiracy theories—though only those he considers true.
“I believed in the crazy conspiracy theory back in 2020 that it was stupid to mask three-year-olds at the height of the COVID pandemic,” he said. “I believed in this crazy conspiracy theory that the media and the government were covering up the fact that Joe Biden was clearly unable to do the job.”
Vance concluded by suggesting that the lesson from the Vanity Fair article is to give fewer interviews to mainstream media outlets.
