House Leaders Discuss Iowa Soldiers' Deaths and ACA Tax Extensions

Congressional Focus on National Security and Policy Priorities

DES MOINES, Iowa — As the year draws to a close, lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives are working to finalize key policy decisions before the holiday season begins. This effort includes discussions on a range of issues, from national security to healthcare reform, with a particular emphasis on supporting military personnel and their families.

During an interview with WHO 13 News, U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Congressman Zach Nunn shared their perspectives on several pressing matters. One of the most significant topics was the tragic loss of two Iowa National Guardsmen in Syria. Both lawmakers expressed deep sorrow for the families affected and emphasized the importance of honoring the service of those who protect the nation.

“These were young men who are standing up on the front line to be able to defend our country so that all of us could not only have a safer nation, but family holidays together,” said Congressman Zach Nunn (R) IA-03. “We also have other members of the Iowa National Guard who are currently in recovery overseas. We hope to be able to bring those home, our prayers are with those families.”

Nunn also highlighted the need for continued support for the more than 1,800 National Guardsmen deployed across U.S. CENTCOM. He mentioned a recent conversation with Secretary Hegseth regarding the importance of deterrence and the administration’s commitment to ensuring that these service members have the resources and backing they need.

A Message of Unity and Support

U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R) LA-01 echoed similar sentiments, expressing his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. “We always pray for our men and women in uniform, especially those that are serving overseas, because we know there’s always the threat of danger, but you hope that it never happens,” Scalise said. “And, you know, we woke up to that horrific news over the weekend that it did. And for Iowa especially, we all have heavy hearts, heavy hearts for those families.”

While Scalise and Nunn did not elaborate on potential consequences or actions the U.S. might take in response to the incident, they both indicated that further steps are being considered.

Healthcare Policy and Legislative Goals

In addition to the focus on national security, the lawmakers also discussed proposals related to the Affordable Care Act tax credit extension. Both Scalise and Nunn expressed a commitment to passing a bill out of the House chamber this week, with hopes that the Senate will follow suit and reach an agreement.

The discussion extended to a review of policy accomplishments over the past year and what Iowans and Americans can expect as priorities for the new year. The lawmakers emphasized their dedication to addressing key issues that affect constituents, including healthcare access and economic stability.

Looking Ahead

As the legislative session nears its end, the focus remains on achieving meaningful results that reflect the values and needs of the American people. With the holiday season approaching, the conversations between Scalise and Nunn underscore the importance of unity, support, and forward-thinking policies.
