Holiday Travel Tips and Preparations at West Virginia International Yeager Airport

As the holiday season gains momentum, travel across the United States is on the rise, and West Virginia International Yeager Airport is gearing up for an influx of passengers. The airport anticipates approximately 7,800 travelers between December 18th and January 1st. With gifts, treats, and festive spirit in tow, the airport is making sure that everyone can reach their destinations smoothly.

TSA Reminders and Advice for Travelers

In collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Yeager Airport has provided key reminders and tips for those planning to travel during this busy time. One important point is what can be placed in a carry-on bag. Solid items, gift bags, and snow globes containing less than 3.4 ounces of liquid are all acceptable. However, larger snow globes, as well as drinks like champagne or any spread or spray, must be checked.

Gifts are recommended to be placed in gift bags rather than wrapped, as TSA may need to unwrap them for inspection. This helps streamline the security process and reduces potential delays.

Increased Traffic and Early Arrival Recommendations

With an anticipated increase in the number of people passing through the airport, it's crucial for travelers to arrive early. Longer wait times are expected due to the higher volume of passengers. Arriving ahead of schedule can help avoid unnecessary stress and ensure a smoother experience.

Insights from Airport Leadership

Dominique Ranieri, the Director and CEO of West Virginia International Yeager Airport, shared her perspective on the increased traffic. She noted that while the higher passenger volumes present challenges, they also represent opportunities.

“We’re also experiencing higher passenger volumes than normal, which is a great problem to have, the more folks that are using our airport for their holiday travels,” said Ranieri. “That means more flights so that we can attract here to our airports here to be more direct flights that our community would like to see.”

Ranieri emphasized the importance of being prepared before heading out on a trip. She mentioned that being ready can significantly reduce stress and tension during the journey.

“I always recommend traveling with an airport dad. I’m the airport dad for my family, so I am making sure that those travel documents are ready to go, that everyone’s suitcase is appropriately packed,” she added. “We’re so thankful to our TSA partners here at the airport because they are extremely good at their jobs, and the tips that they provided today will help any passenger in their journeys in this holiday season.”

ID Requirements and the REAL ID Deadline

The TSA is also reminding travelers to ensure they have a valid form of identification, such as a passport or REAL ID. Starting February 1st, travelers without a REAL ID will face a $45 fine and will need an additional form to board a flight.

Eric Guthier, a TSA spokesperson, highlighted the importance of having your ID ready before going through security. He explained that not being prepared can slow down the entire process for everyone.

“When passengers come to the checkpoint, and they’re not ready either. They have their ID, and it’s not out, or they haven’t taken the necessary steps ahead of time,” said Guthier. “It slows down the process for everyone. If we have to confirm it using alternate methods, if we have to conduct additional screening, each small instance of that makes things take a little bit longer for everyone else.”

In addition to managing the increased traffic, crews at Yeager Airport are working diligently to ensure that ice and snow impacting the region do not affect the runways. Their efforts aim to keep flights running on time, allowing passengers to depart and arrive as scheduled.
