Child Star from 'Grinch' Recalls Freaking Out Over Her Safety
The Grinch: A Green Giant with a Heart of Gold
The Grinch may be the greatest, greenest Christmas-hater in the history of holiday comedy, but he wasn’t a monster – at least, not when it came to child safety. While his antics in the classic Dr. Seuss tale How the Grinch Stole Christmas are well known, the behind-the-scenes story of the 2000 live-action film adaptation reveals a different side of the character, thanks to the man who brought him to life: Jim Carrey.
Carrey’s transformation into the Grinch was no small feat. The intense makeup and prosthetic regimen required for the role was so grueling that he famously trained with a CIA torture specialist to endure the eight-plus-hour “Grinchifying” process. Despite the physical toll, Carrey’s dedication to the role was matched only by his compassion for those around him, especially young cast members like Taylor Momsen, who played Cindy Lou Who.
Momsen, who was just six years old during filming, recalls how Carrey treated her with an unexpected level of care. She described him as “incredibly protective,” noting that he always checked in on her and made sure she was safe. One particular incident stands out in her memory: a sledding stunt that went awry. During the scene where the characters descend the mountain on a sled, a mishap nearly caused her to fall. According to Momsen, Carrey immediately called for a stop and rushed to check on her.
“I was having a great time. I was laughing; I wasn’t thinking about the fact that I just almost fell very high off the ground,” she said. However, Carrey’s reaction showed how seriously he took his responsibility as both an actor and a mentor. His actions were a testament to his character, even if he was playing a character known for his dislike of Christmas.
Momsen also shared how she viewed Carrey during the filming. “I never knew what Jim looked like, because I never saw him outside of the makeup until the premiere, and I was too young for his films,” she explained. To her, he was simply “Jim who looked like the Grinch.” This perspective highlights how immersive Carrey’s performance was, making it difficult for even a young child to separate the actor from the character.
Despite the challenges of the role, Carrey’s commitment to his craft was evident. He approached the part with the same intensity and passion that defined his career. “At such a young age, to watch an artist who is that serious at what they’re doing even while playing this very over-the-top character, it was clear to me how much he was putting into it and how much of an artist he was,” Momsen reflected.
Beyond his professional dedication, there are rumors that Carrey extended his care to the entire cast. It’s said that his cooking skills were just as impressive as his acting, with some claiming that his roast beast was delicious. This adds another layer to the story of a man who, despite playing a character known for his bitterness, demonstrated kindness and generosity both on and off the set.
