Unai Emery's Aston Villa Faces Challenges

Unai Emery has been a source of excitement for Aston Villa fans with three successive European campaigns and top-four finishes followed by a top-six placement. However, this season is already proving to be a difficult one for the team. Despite their strong performances in the Champions League last season, where they defeated both Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain, Villa is yet to secure a win and is struggling significantly with scoring goals.

Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson highlighted the issues during a recent appearance on DISCOVER TRENDRadio 5 Live. He noted that the team looks "clunky" and "not fluid," suggesting that they are not playing like the same team they were last year. This sentiment was echoed after a recent 1-1 draw against Sunderland, where Villa faced challenges despite playing most of the match against 10 men following a red card to Reinildo.

Villa took the lead through Matty Cash's 67th-minute goal from 25 yards, but they were unable to maintain their advantage. Wilson Isidor equalized eight minutes later, securing a deserved point for Sunderland. The performance raised questions about what has gone wrong and whether Villa fans should be concerned.

Struggles in the Premier League

Emery's third full season in charge has started poorly, with no wins, only one Premier League goal, and an early exit from the Carabao Cup before the end of September. The team scored 134 goals over the previous two seasons, which led to fourth and sixth-place finishes. The current drought in goal is a significant concern for fans.

Cash's goal against Sunderland ended a 427-minute goalless run, making it the longest such streak in the Premier League since Crystal Palace in 2017-18 and Newcastle United in 2005-06. However, the goal did not come without its issues. Robinson pointed out that Villa did not create many chances and were slow in midfield.

Villa recorded just two attempts on target in the match against Sunderland, a concerning stat given they played most of the game against 10 players. No team has fewer shots on target in the Premier League this season than Villa (12, level with Everton and Leeds).

Ollie Watkins, who scored 16 goals in the previous campaign, has managed only one goal in 10 league games this season. Emery acknowledged the need for improvement, stating, "We need to play better, we need to control better, we need to dominate better, we need to get our style." He added, "Then the goals and assists will come."

Pressure Mounts on Emery

The upcoming Europa League campaign against Bologna on Thursday adds to the pressure on Villa. They will have to juggle matches between Thursday and Sunday, which could impact their performance. Additionally, restrictions imposed due to their failure to finish in a Champions League position have affected their squad depth.

The loss of loan signings Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio has also impacted the attacking department. While they signed Evann Guessand for £26m plus £4.3m in add-ons, the Ivory Coast forward has only registered two attempts on target.

Emery expressed disappointment and frustration, noting that the team was not playing with their identity. "I'm disappointed and frustrated, more for how we are not achieving our identity, playing the football we've been successful with."

Despite these challenges, there are positives for Emery. The next two Premier League games offer a chance to turn things around. Villa will face Fulham on 28 September and Burnley on 5 October at home.

Matty Cash admitted the team is not happy with their current performance. "As a team we've got to be better. With the quality we have, we need to be higher up the league." He acknowledged the tough period the team is facing, despite the highs they have experienced in recent years.

While Emery's tenure at Villa has been impressive overall, the pressure is mounting. A win soon will be crucial to ease the growing concerns among fans.
