UK Type 31 Frigates: Naval Gun Support MOU Signed
Strategic Partnership for Naval Gun Support
Babcock has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BAE Systems Bofors, focusing on the support package for naval gun systems that will be installed on the Royal Navy’s future Type 31 frigates. This agreement highlights the unique configuration of 57mm and 40mm naval guns that the Type 31 class will feature, marking a significant step in modernizing the fleet.
The MoU was announced on 18 September, emphasizing the anticipated in-service support for the Bofors 57mm Mk3 and 40mm Mk4 systems. These systems are set to be integrated into each Type 31 frigate, which will be equipped with a single 57mm main gun and two 40mm secondary weapon systems. This combination provides robust short-range conventional deterrence against small vessels, drones, anti-ship missiles, and fast attack craft.
Babcock, responsible for manufacturing the Type 31 frigates at its Rosyth shipyard, is already collaborating with BAE Systems to integrate the Bofors weapons systems onto the lead ship in the class, HMS Venturer. This partnership underscores the importance of these systems in enhancing the capabilities of the Royal Navy.
Introduction of New Naval Guns
Both the 57mm and 40mm naval guns represent new additions to the Royal Navy, which is currently undergoing an extensive warships replacement program. This initiative aims to address the critical issue of low hull numbers and diminished capability. Babcock has been providing in-service support for various naval gun systems, including the 4.5” Mk8 gun used across the old Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers, as well as the Phalanx CIWS and the GSA9 gunfire control system fitted to the Type 45 destroyers.
The 57mm Main Gun: Bofors 57mm Mk3
Known as the BAE Systems 57mm Mk110, the Bofors 57mm Mk3 is designed for operations in the littoral zone, where warships operate closer to shore and face potential threats from onshore sources. It is also effective in combating fast attack craft and patrol boats. This system has been chosen as the deck gun for the US Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships and the US Coast Guard’s large National Security Cutters, which are similar in size and weight to the UK’s incoming Type 31 frigates.
Secondary Guns: Bofors 40mm
To complement the single 57mm Mk3/Mk110 on the Type 31 frigates, two 40mm secondary weapon systems will be installed. One will be mounted in an elevated position just behind the main gun, while the second will be installed aft on top of the helicopter hangar. This configuration ensures a wide arc of secondary defense, effectively supporting the primary 57mm system.
Strategic Placement and Operational Needs
Given that the Type 31 frigates are expected to be relatively lightly equipped upon launch, they are likely to be forward-deployed to locations currently occupied by the Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol vessels. The combination of 57mm and 40mm naval guns makes them ideally suited for this role, functioning as light patrol frigates initially.
This strategic partnership between Babcock and BAE Systems Bofors marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the Royal Navy's fleet, ensuring enhanced capabilities and readiness for future maritime challenges.
