Trump Administration Sued Over University Racial Bias Rules

Legal Challenge Against Federal Funding Cuts
A group of students, faculty, and staff from the University of California (UC) system, along with educator unions, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over significant federal funding cuts affecting the UC system. The legal action comes amid allegations that federal agencies have claimed UC campuses failed to address antisemitism and have continued to engage in racial discrimination in their admissions processes.
The Trump administration has already cut more than $500 million in federal funding from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Additionally, the administration recently proposed a settlement deal with a $1.2 billion price tag. However, it is important to note that the University of California system itself is not a party to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit states, “The President’s attempt to require that universities conform to his worldview is un-American and unconstitutional.” It further claims that through a series of actions targeting institutions of higher education, the Trump administration is attempting to coerce colleges and universities across the country to infringe on the speech rights of faculty, academic and other staff, and students.
The court document draws a comparison between the Trump administration and the “fascism [that] raged throughout Europe” during World War II. It argues that the federal government is using “a scheme of targeting, bullying, and unconstitutional actions aimed at institutions of higher education across the country.”
Protests and Legal Actions
Protests have been a recurring theme on UC campuses, particularly following the events of October 7, 2023, when universities across the nation were flooded with anti-Israel protests. UCLA became infamous for being home to the “Jew Exclusion Zone” during this time. The school recently settled a lawsuit over the event for nearly $6.5 million.
In addition to the protests, the university has also openly publicized its plan for skirting the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action policies. This has led to an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) into UCLA and other California schools over the allegations.
Reactions and Implications
Todd Wolfson, president of the American Association of University Professors, expressed strong opposition to the Trump administration's actions. He stated, “We will not stand by as the Trump administration destroys one of the largest public university higher education systems in the country and bludgeons academic freedom at the University of California, the heart of the revered free speech movement.”
The White House has responded to the lawsuit, claiming it is a sign that federal funds are not serving the public at the university. Assistant White House press secretary Liz Huston told DCNF, “This bunch of victimhood-seeking professors have been laughed out of court once already, but keep trying their failed arguments.”
Despite the lawsuit, the UC system continues to engage in legal and advocacy efforts to restore and maintain funding for critical research. A UC spokesman noted that federal cuts to research funding threaten lifesaving biomedical research, hamper U.S. economic competitiveness, and jeopardize the health of Americans who depend on the University’s cutting-edge medical science and innovation.
Ongoing Legal Battles
The AAUP did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. However, the ongoing legal battles highlight the tensions between the Trump administration and educational institutions over federal funding and academic freedom.
As the situation unfolds, the implications for the future of higher education in the United States remain significant. The lawsuit underscores the importance of protecting academic freedom and ensuring that federal funds are used responsibly to serve the public interest. The outcome of these legal challenges could have far-reaching effects on the landscape of higher education in the country.
