A Dominant Performance by the Seattle Seahawks

The City of New Orleans has not experienced a defeat as crushing as the one delivered by the Seattle Seahawks in recent memory. On Sunday afternoon, the Seahawks showcased an overwhelming display of dominance, securing a 44-13 victory that marked their first win against the Saints since the War of 1812. This win not only snapped a four-game losing streak but also solidified the Seahawks' position at 2-1 on the season.

From the very beginning, the Seahawks demonstrated their intent to take control of the game. When they scored a touchdown on their opening drive against Pittsburgh last week, it ended a 22-game drought of not doing so. However, this time, they did not have to wait for another 22 games. The Seahawks quickly found success again on their opening drive, with Sam Darnold connecting with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a touchdown. This set the tone for what would become a historic day for the team.

The Saints struggled to respond. After their second drive, they were forced to punt, which led to a dramatic turn of events. Rookie wide receiver Tory Horton returned the punt an astonishing 95 yards, marking a significant milestone in Seahawks history. This score accomplished two key achievements:

  • No. 1 - Tory Horton now owns the Seahawks franchise record for the longest punt return touchdown in team history.
  • No. 2 - Horton became the first Seahawk since Tyler Lockett in Week 1 of the 2015 season to score a punt return touchdown. At that time, Lockett was a rookie and faced the St. Louis Rams.

Following the punt return, the Saints were forced to punt once again, leading to another critical mistake. Seahawks safety D'Anthony Bell, who had recently been called up from the practice squad, blocked the punt attempt, setting up the Seattle offense at the Saints' 11-yard line. Just two plays later, Kenneth Walker III found the end zone, extending the lead to 21-0 in the first quarter.

New Orleans managed to score a field goal on their third drive, but the Seahawks quickly countered with two more touchdown drives. The special teams continued to shine when Dareke Young returned a kickoff 60 yards, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown pass to Tory Horton. This performance placed Horton among elite company, joining Bobby Engram and Joey Galloway as players who have recorded both a punt return touchdown and a receiving touchdown in the same game.

Seattle closed out the first half with another touchdown run by Kenneth Walker III and a 56-yard field goal by Jason Myers. The Saints made a puzzling decision to kick a field goal within the Seahawks' red zone, resulting in a halftime score of 38-6 instead of 38-3. This choice proved to be a costly one, as the Saints failed to make a significant comeback in the second half.

The Seahawks extended their lead further with two more field goals in the third quarter, building a 44-6 advantage. New Orleans finally scored a touchdown when Spencer Rattler found Jack Stoll in the back of the end zone, but it was far too late. By that point, there was only 14:53 left in the game, and the Seahawks had already pulled Sam Darnold and the rest of their offensive starters. Drew Lock entered the game, and the Seahawks even punted for the first time. Up to that point, the Seahawks had scored on seven consecutive drives.

With a 2-1 record, the Seahawks are now preparing for a crucial division showdown against the Arizona Cardinals this Thursday night in the Valley of the Sun. Their performance against the Saints has sent a clear message about their strength and determination.
