A Disappointing End to the Road Season

The Philadelphia Phillies concluded their regular season road schedule with a significant loss, falling to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the final game of their series with a score of 9-2. This defeat not only marked the end of their road campaign but also ended a six-game winning streak in series play for the Phillies.

Struggles on the Mound

Ranger Suárez, who had been a reliable presence in the rotation, struggled throughout his four innings of work. He allowed five runs in the second inning alone, which proved to be the turning point of the game. In total, Suárez gave up six runs on eight hits and one walk, recording just two strikeouts. His performance was especially frustrating given that he needed 79 pitches to record 12 outs.

Suárez's difficulties started early in the first inning when he allowed a double from Ketel Marte and a bunt single from Geraldo Perdomo. Corbin Carroll then scored the first run of the game with a groundout. Otto Kemp's error on a ball hit by Gabriel Moreno allowed Moreno and Carroll to reach second and third, respectively. Despite these challenges, Suárez managed to escape the inning with a strikeout and a groundout.

However, the second inning was far more damaging. Suárez allowed four consecutive batters to reach base, including three singles and a walk. Marte’s third single brought in two runs, making the score 3-0. After getting Perdomo to fly out, Suárez faced a devastating blow as Carroll hit a three-run home run, extending Arizona’s lead to 6-0.

Offensive Struggles

On the offensive side, the Phillies were unable to capitalize on opportunities against Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez. Despite collecting 11 hits, they were only 1-14 with runners in scoring position and stranded 13 runners on base. Rodriguez pitched six shutout innings, allowing six hits and three walks, showcasing his resilience and effectiveness.

Philadelphia had several chances to break through, particularly in the second, fourth, and fifth innings. Alec Bohm and Weston Wilson each had leadoff doubles, but neither advanced beyond second base. The Phillies looked poised to take advantage of a tiring Rodriguez in the sixth inning when Bryson Stott led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wilson walked to put runners on first and third, but the threat was erased when Harrison Bader popped up and Kyle Schwarber grounded into a double play.

The offense finally broke through in the eighth inning, but it was too late to change the outcome. Nick Castellanos singled with runners on first and second to score the first run of the game, and a pair of walks forced in another run. However, Bader lined out with the bases loaded, and a great running grab by center fielder Jorge Barrosa ended any hope of a comeback.

Looking Ahead

With this loss, the Phillies will return home for their final six games of the regular season. Their next matchup begins on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. Cristopher Sánchez (13-5, 2.66) is set to start for Philadelphia, while Miami has yet to announce its starter. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:45 pm.
