Public Opposition to Times Square Casino Remains Strong

A recent survey has revealed that the majority of residents in and around Times Square are against the proposed casino backed by Jay-Z. The poll, conducted by Tulchin Research, shows that 67% of registered voters in the area oppose the gaming facility, which is being developed by partners SL Green, Caesars, and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Only 24% support the project, with 9% undecided.

The No Times Square Casino coalition, which includes the Broadway League group of theater owners and producers, commissioned the survey. According to the findings, 50% of those opposed are “strongly” against the casino. The poll highlights widespread concerns about crime, congestion, and the impact on quality of life in the neighborhood.

“These findings underscore that any effort to move forward with a Times Square casino would be met with intense and widespread public backlash,” said Tulchin Research in its analysis. The opposition remains overwhelming, consistent, and deeply rooted despite efforts by developers to promote the project.

Political Implications of the Casino Proposal

The controversial casino bid, planned at 1515 Broadway and 45th Street, could become a key issue in the race to succeed retiring Manhattan Rep. Jerrold Nadler in Congress. About 64% of voters polled said they are less likely to support a candidate who backs the betting facility, while 18% said they are more likely to vote for a pro-casino politician, and 18% were unsure.

The district’s six-member community advisory committee could vote on whether to approve the casino as early as Thursday after a public hearing. They have until September 30 to make a decision. The panel consists of appointees from the governor, mayor, borough president, local state senator, assembly member, and council member.

Despite the $250 million in community benefits pledged by Caesars Palace Times Square, the opposition remains strong. Similar results were found in a previous survey released in May 2024, which showed 71% of registered voters opposed the project.

Demographic Breakdown of Opposition

Opposition to the proposed casino spans across all major demographic groups. For example, 73% of women oppose the casino, compared to 17% who support it. Likewise, 59% of men are against the project, with 33% supporting it. Among voters aged 55 and over, 74% reject the casino, while only 16% support it.

Younger voters under 55 also oppose the project, with 57% against it and 34% in favor. Concerns about the impact on the neighborhood include increased crime, worsened traffic congestion, and a decline in the overall livability of the area. Specifically, 77% of respondents are concerned about an increase in crime, 75% believe the project will make the area less pleasant, 74% worry about more traffic, and 73% fear dirtier streets.

Responses from Proponents and Opponents

Tulchin Research emphasized that opposition to the casino is broad, intense, and deeply entrenched. “Voters overwhelmingly reject the proposal, citing fears of more crime, congestion, and a diminished quality of life. These concerns cut across demographics and have remained consistent over time despite the casino sponsors’ efforts to sway public opinion.”

In response, the casino bidder claimed that the poll was biased. “This is more fake news from theater owners who want to maintain their monopoly on entertainment options in Times Square,” said a statement from Caesars Palace Times Square. “In the only credible poll that matters, 2/3 of New Yorkers who participated in the public input process have spoken in favor of Caesars Palace Times Square. We expect to see an even stronger display of public support at the final public hearing this week.”

Desiree Perez, CEO of Roc Nation, stated that the project has received strong support from residents and local businesses. “Over the past four years, we have had hundreds of conversations with Manhattan residents to hear directly from them about what Caesars Palace Times Square would mean for them. They overwhelmingly support this project,” she said.

Broader Support and Community Efforts

The casino bid has garnered support from several high-profile individuals and organizations. Rapper Fat Joe and radio host Charlamagne tha God testified in favor of the project during the first public hearing. Additionally, members of Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network and trade unions supported the proposal.

On the other hand, theater owners have taken steps to spread awareness about their opposition. They recently inserted anti-casino fliers into the iconic Playbill magazine, urging patrons to protest the Midtown gambling hall. A representative from Caesars Palace Times Square accused the Broadway League of “fear-mongering” and twisting the facts, claiming the casino will bring more business to the theaters, create jobs, and improve public safety.
