Marcus Mariota Makes Bold Statement to Raiders Following Commanders Victory

Marcus Mariota's Emotional Victory Over the Las Vegas Raiders
Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota had a personal stake in the team’s 41-24 victory against the Las Vegas Raiders on September 21 at Northwest Stadium. The win was especially meaningful for Mariota, who played for the Raiders from 2021 to 2022. With several of his former teammates on the opposing side, Mariota was determined to secure a win.
Mariota, who was serving as the backup quarterback due to an injury to Jayden Daniels, stepped up in a big way. He completed 15 of 21 passes for 201 yards and one touchdown. Additionally, he contributed with his legs, rushing for 40 yards and another touchdown. His performance was a key factor in the Commanders’ dominant win.
After the game, Mariota expressed how emotional the victory was for him. “This means a lot to me, so it was awesome,” he told FOX Sports. “It was such a good group of guys who were dedicated to doing their best and executing, and it was fun to be a part of… I was a part of a great franchise with the Raiders, and to see some of these guys and to play against them, it was a lot of fun for me. I’m just a part of such a great culture, and I’ll never take that for granted. I’m truly blessed and truly appreciative of it.”
Commanders' Offense Puts Pressure on Raiders' Defense
The Commanders' offense made life difficult for the Raiders' defense throughout the game. Despite the Raiders' defensive unit being a bright spot in previous games, they struggled against Washington. The defense allowed points in every quarter, with 13 points in the second and 14 in the third making the game lopsided.
The Commanders also relied heavily on their running game, accumulating 201 rushing yards. Three players scored touchdowns on the ground, which was a significant blow to the Raiders' defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and his unit.
Raiders Continue to Struggle with Their Running Game
The Raiders’ running game remains a concern for the team. Three weeks into the NFL season, the offense has been inconsistent, but there were signs of improvement in this game. The Raiders managed to rush for 93 yards, which is a small step forward.
Veteran quarterback Geno Smith emphasized the importance of establishing the run early in games. “Extremely important [to establish the run],” Smith said after the game. “But more importantly, we got to dominate the line of scrimmage — we got to own the line of scrimmage. That’s football in a nutshell. If you can win the line of scrimmage, you can win a lot of games.”
Smith added that winning the line of scrimmage would help the offense flow better. “If you can win the line of scrimmage, control the turnover battle, get first downs, convert in the red zone, be great in situations — you can win a lot of games. So yeah, it’s a lot of things that we can do better, but I look forward to getting it right.”
A Message from Mariota to the Raiders
Mariota’s performance sent a strong message to the Raiders. His ability to perform under pressure and lead the Commanders to a decisive win highlighted his experience and determination. For Mariota, the victory was not just about the scoreboard but also about honoring his past with the Raiders and showing respect to the players he once played with.
As the season progresses, both teams will need to address their weaknesses and build on their strengths. The Raiders must find consistency in their running game, while the Commanders will look to maintain their momentum and continue building on their success.
