Washington Commanders Show Resilience in Victory Over Las Vegas Raiders

The Washington Commanders faced a challenging week with multiple changes to their starting offense due to injuries and coaching decisions. Despite these obstacles, the team managed to secure a commanding 41-24 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The win showcased the depth of talent within the roster and highlighted the contributions of several players who stepped up when needed most.

With quarterback Jayden Daniels sidelined due to an injured left knee, Marcus Mariota took over under center for the first time since 2022. Mariota’s performance was solid, completing 15 of 21 passes for 206 yards and one touchdown. His 43-yard scoring pass to Luke McCaffrey in the final minutes of the game proved to be a crucial play. However, Mariota also fumbled on a run, showing that he still has some work to do in his return to the NFL.

The Commanders' running game was particularly effective, with a committee of backs finding holes behind a revamped offensive line. Jeremy McNichols led the way with a 60-yard rushing touchdown, which was the longest rushing TD for Washington since Adrian Peterson's 90-yard run in 2018. Chris Rodriguez, who had been inactive for the first two weeks of the season, contributed 39 yards on 11 carries. Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, a rookie seventh-round draft pick, added 26 yards on eight touches, including a 1-yard touchdown that set up by Mariota’s 56-yard throw to Terry McLaurin.

Mariota himself ran six times for 40 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown on the opening possession and a scramble just before halftime that resulted in a sideline collision that left coach Dan Quinn bloodied. The offensive line played a key role in the success, allowing the Commanders to gain 174 yards on the ground in the first half alone.

On the special teams side, rookie fourth-round selection Jaylin Lane made a significant impact with a 90-yard punt return, tying the franchise record for the longest punt score. This marked the first such return for Washington since Jamison Crowder did it in 2016. Coach Quinn praised the team's ability to deliver when called upon, emphasizing that it’s often difficult to predict who will make the big play.

Injuries have been a challenge for both teams. Daniels missed his first game since entering the NFL after sustaining a knee injury in Washington’s 27-18 loss at Green Bay on September 11. Austin Ekeler was lost for the season in that same game, while receiver Noah Brown dealt with groin and knee issues that kept him out of Sunday’s matchup. On the Raiders’ side, tight end Michael Mayer left the game with a concussion after leading with his helmet during a tackle on a punt in the first quarter.

Washington’s defense, while not producing any turnovers, managed to sack Geno Smith five times, including two sacks by Bobby Wagner. Smith completed 19 of 29 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns, all to Tre Tucker, who caught eight passes for 145 yards. Meanwhile, Ashton Jeanty, the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, struggled early but finished with 63 yards on 17 carries.

Raiders coach Pete Carroll acknowledged the challenges his team faced, citing the short turnaround after their previous loss and the need for better management across all phases of the game. He also expressed concern about the team’s tackling, as the Commanders were able to move the ball effectively on the ground.

Looking ahead, the Washington Commanders will travel to Atlanta next Sunday, while the Las Vegas Raiders will host Chicago. Both teams will need to address their respective challenges as they continue their seasons.
