Jimmy Kimmel's Show Returns with Charlie Kirk's Special Condition

The Controversy Surrounding Jimmy Kimmel’s Show
Jimmy Kimmel fans have been in an uproar after his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, was pulled from the air indefinitely. The situation has escalated further with new revelations that Kimmel may be replaced by a tribute to Charlie Kirk, and he might even need to donate to Turning Point USA if he wants to return to television.
ABC made the decision to suspend the show following comments that were deemed "insensitive" about Kirk's assassination during Kimmel's Monday night monologue. This move came as a result of pressure from Sinclair Inc. and Nexstar, which own local affiliate stations that broadcast Kimmel's program.
Trump’s Response and Further Reactions
President Trump has publicly criticized Kimmel for the suspension, mocking him and threatening other late-night hosts like Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers. His comments have only fueled the controversy surrounding the incident.
In some markets, Kimmel’s show is being replaced by a tribute to Charlie Kirk. Sinclair Inc., one of the major networks involved, announced that during Kimmel's original Friday timeslot, a remembrance of Kirk would air in its place. This tribute will also be shown across all Sinclair-owned stations over the weekend.
Sinclair has set specific conditions for the return of Jimmy Kimmel Live! on their stations. They stated that they will not lift the suspension until formal discussions are held with ABC regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability. Additionally, they called on Kimmel to issue a direct apology to the Kirk family and make a meaningful personal donation to both the Kirk Family and Turning Point USA.
Kimmel’s Comments and the Fallout
The comments that led to Kimmel’s suspension were made during his Monday night monologue. He addressed the political views of Tyler Robinson, who is alleged to have murdered Charlie Kirk, and criticized Donald Trump’s approach to discussing the murder when asked about it.
Kimmel said, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.” He also pointed out that Trump shifted the conversation to the ballroom he is building at the White House when asked about how he was holding up after Kirk’s death.
These remarks drew immediate scrutiny from Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, who mentioned considering an investigation into Kimmel’s comments. Shortly after, Nexstar announced it would stop airing Kimmel’s show immediately.
Broader Implications and Industry Reactions
Nexstar’s decision comes amid a major merger proposal with Tegna, which needs approval from Carr. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
Hollywood stars and fans have expressed outrage over the cancellation of Kimmel’s show, calling it a “scared” reaction from the industry. WWE legend Randy Orton vowed to boycott ABC, calling the decision “pathetic.”
The controversy has also drawn comparisons to the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert by CBS earlier this year. A merger between Paramount and Skydance faced scrutiny after the FCC approved it just after Colbert’s show was canceled.
Trump celebrated the cancellation of The Late Show on Truth Social, suggesting that Kimmel would be next. After news of Kimmel’s show being pulled broke, Trump again praised the actions and took shots at NBC’s late-night hosts, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers.
“Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done,” he wrote. “Kimmel has ZERO talent and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that's possible. That leaves Jimmy [Fallon] and Seth [Meyers], two total losers on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible.”
