A recent controversy surrounding a politically charged comment made by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has led to significant backlash from conservative groups, including the White House. The incident has resulted in some ABC affiliates choosing to drop the show, marking a stark contrast to how the network handled a similar situation 24 years ago involving another prominent host.

The latest issue arose after Kimmel made remarks about the alleged killer of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during his monologue on Monday. His comments criticized the “MAGA gang” for trying to distance the suspect from their movement and using the incident for political gain. This sparked outrage among right-wing media personalities and conservative audiences, leading to threats from Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr and an announcement from station owner Nexstar that it would pre-empt the program. In response, ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely.

Another major station group, Sinclair, also announced that it would keep the show off the air until formal discussions with ABC take place regarding the network’s commitment to professionalism and accountability.

The reaction to Kimmel's remarks was not immediate. While some social media users expressed anger over his comments, station owners and ABC initially remained silent. However, the situation escalated quickly, prompting a strong response from multiple stakeholders.

This is not the first time a late-night show has faced criticism for its content. A similar incident occurred in 2001 when Bill Maher, then the host of Politically Incorrect, made controversial remarks about the 9/11 hijackers. During an episode aired just days after the attacks, Maher engaged in a discussion with guest Dinesh D'Souza, who argued that the hijackers were not cowards but warriors willing to sacrifice their lives. Maher responded by criticizing U.S. military actions, calling them "cowardly."

The fallout from these comments was swift. Dan Patrick, then a conservative radio host and now the lieutenant governor of Texas, urged his listeners to contact advertisers like FedEx and Sears to pressure them to pull their ads. As a result, some ABC affiliates dropped the show. At the time, White House press secretary Ari Fleischer addressed the controversy, stating that "people have to watch what they say and watch what they do."

However, unlike the current situation with Jimmy Kimmel Live!, ABC did not pull Politically Incorrect off the air. Instead, Maher issued an apology the following night, clarifying that he was criticizing U.S. military policy, not service members. ABC released a statement supporting the show, emphasizing its commitment to free speech and the exchange of diverse opinions. Affiliates that had dropped the show resumed airing it a week later.

Despite this, Politically Incorrect never fully recovered from the controversy. Some advertisers continued to avoid the show, and it was eventually canceled after the 2001–02 season. Maher later moved on to host Real Time on HBO, where he has continued to engage in political commentary. He is expected to address the current Kimmel controversy on an upcoming episode.

Interestingly, Bob Iger, the current CEO of Disney, was involved in the decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! He was then the company’s president, alongside Dana Walden, the co-chair of Disney Entertainment. At the time, then-CEO Michael Eisner criticized Maher’s comments but did not take action to remove Politically Incorrect from the air.

Following the cancellation of Politically Incorrect, ABC launched a new late-night show hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, which has since become a staple of the network.
