Authorities have reported that the 22-year-old suspect was raised in a conservative family in southern Utah but had adopted "leftist ideology." His parents disclosed to investigators that he had shifted politically leftward and embraced pro-LGBTQ rights over the past year. Records show his voter status as inactive, indicating he hadn't participated in two consecutive general elections.

He confessed to his transgender partner that he targeted Kirk because he "had enough of his hatred."
