Guardiola Stunned as Arsenal Halt Man City's Defense

Pep Guardiola's Tactical Shift and the Unsuccessful Defensive Approach
Pep Guardiola admitted he didn’t enjoy implementing a defensive strategy that ultimately backfired during Manchester City’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday. The match, which ended in a last-minute equalizer from Gabriel Martinelli, highlighted the challenges Guardiola faced in adapting his usual approach.
In the second half at the Emirates Stadium, Guardiola took an unusually cautious route after Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the ninth minute. He opted to substitute Haaland and replace Phil Foden, shifting to a back-five formation in an attempt to secure a win. However, this decision did not yield the desired results.
Arsenal capitalized on City’s deep defensive setup, controlling possession and creating opportunities. Martinelli broke the offside trap with a well-timed run, receiving a pass from Eberechi Eze before calmly finishing over Gianluigi Donnarumma. This moment proved decisive, as City managed just 32.8% of possession—marking the lowest figure for any Guardiola team in a Premier League match.
Guardiola humorously acknowledged the record, saying, “I can't believe I have another record in this country.” He praised Arsenal for their performance, particularly their ability to defend with five players. “We are not built for that, but sometimes we have to accept it,” he added. While conceding that Arsenal were better, he emphasized that such situations are rare and that he must prove himself again with new strategies.
The tactical shift reflected Guardiola’s desperation to maintain momentum after a difficult start to the season. Resorting to a more defensive style reminiscent of his former rival, Jose Mourinho, showed how far he was willing to go to secure a crucial victory. Unfortunately, the move did not pay off, and City now sit in ninth place, eight points behind leaders Liverpool.
A Team in Transition
City’s struggles are partly attributed to their recent heavy investment in younger players, which has led to a lack of experience. In their first five league matches, they have managed only two wins, highlighting the challenges of integrating new talent into the squad.
Guardiola described the week as demanding, especially facing one of Europe’s top teams. “It was difficult to play the way we wanted to,” he said. “I would prefer to play another way, but when you play so many games, you can defend deep and take a result.”
He admitted that the opponent’s performance was superior and that City had to adapt accordingly. “Honestly, it is because the opponent was better. We have to survive in that way and we did,” he explained. Guardiola also expressed openness to criticism, stating that he welcomes feedback and is prepared to address concerns about his conservative tactics.
Despite the disappointment of Martinelli’s goal, Guardiola found some positives in City’s performance. He emphasized the importance of regaining the team’s spirit, which he felt was lost during their troubled run last season. “I don’t care about the results this season. I want to see the spirit back. We lost it last season and we have to recover it. We did that this week,” he said.
Mikel Arteta's Perspective
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta chose not to engage in the debate surrounding Guardiola’s tactics, likely out of respect for the former mentor who once worked under him at City. “Everybody tries to do their best to get a result. It's fine,” Arteta remarked. He expressed pride in his players but disappointment in the outcome, noting that Arsenal dominated after City scored.
Arteta defended his decision to start with a midfield trio of Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Martin Zubimendi, despite some raised eyebrows. “For me, we had a lot of attacking players in that team. Nobody asked me about the midfield three in Bilbao,” he said, referencing a previous Champions League win. He maintained that the selection was the best for the team, emphasizing confidence in his choices.
As both teams continue their campaigns, the match highlighted the evolving nature of football tactics and the challenges each manager faces in adapting to different scenarios.
