Molly Qerim’s Departure from 'First Take' and the Reasons Behind It

ESPN President of Content, Burke Magnus, recently shared insights into the reasons behind Molly Qerim’s unexpected exit from 'First Take.' Qerim, who had spent 19 years with the network, announced her departure earlier this week, which led to an emotional on-air farewell from Stephen A. Smith. Magnus also expressed his respect for Qerim before explaining the circumstances that led to her decision.

Magnus highlighted that the decision was not made lightly. “Molly Qerim is a wonderful person and an unbelievable teammate and colleague,” he said in an interview with The Athletic. “There were a couple of dimensions to this. One, we were in a renewal conversation. Two, 10 years to do something like that is a long time.”

Qerim was initially set to leave the network at the end of the year when her contract expired. However, there were discussions about renewing her deal. Despite these talks, Qerim ultimately chose to move on, seeking new opportunities in front of the camera. “I'm not going to speak for her, but I think there was a feeling that she wants to do other things, and successfully being on a top show like that for a decade qualifies as maybe I can turn the page and do something else,” Magnus added.

He noted that the decision was more about Qerim wanting to explore other possibilities rather than any dissatisfaction with her current role. “It honestly became less about that, and more about, in my opinion, her wanting to do other and explore other things. It ended up being easier for her to make a clean break entirely.”

Even before Qerim confirmed her departure, Magnus revealed that she was already planning to step down from her role on 'First Take.' “She was going to come off First Take either way and that was something where we had already crossed that bridge,” he said. “So it was from our perspective much more about what else could she be doing, how could we make her more versatile, get her involved in different things? That's what we were trying to do.”

Magnus also addressed the speculation surrounding Qerim’s exit. “I read a lot of stuff on X [on Tuesday]. There's no controversy here. There's no shoe that's going to drop. She's an awesome person. You know, it's business. You try your best and we just weren't totally aligned. I totally respect her interest, in rather than going into a less defined situation, to make a clean break and try to do other things outside of ESPN.”

Qerim’s Emotional Farewell

Taking to social media, Qerim shared her decision to step away from 'First Take' and reflected on her time on the program. “After much reflection, I've decided it's time to close this incredible chapter and step away from First Take,” she wrote.

“Hosting this show has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Every morning, I had the privilege of sharing the desk with some of the most brilliant, passionate, and entertaining voices in sports - and with all of you, the best fans in the world.

“I'm so grateful for what this journey has given me: lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and the chance to be part of something truly special. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for welcoming me into your homes.”

Qerim’s departure marks the end of an era for 'First Take,' and her contributions to the show will not be forgotten. Her decision to seek new opportunities reflects a desire to grow and explore different aspects of her career, while still maintaining the respect and admiration of her colleagues and fans.
