Dublin Welcomes House of Guinness with a Red Carpet Premiere

A Grand Celebration of Legacy and Drama
The black stuff took center stage in Dublin on Thursday night as the world premiere of House of Guinness brought stars and invited guests to the Lighthouse Cinema for a celebration of one of the most anticipated television dramas of the year. The event marked the beginning of a global journey for the eight-part series, which will launch on Netflix on 25 September.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century Dublin and New York, the series delves into the extraordinary legacy of one of Europe’s most famous dynasties: the Guinness family. The story begins in the immediate aftermath of Sir Benjamin Guinness’s death, exploring the dramatic fates of his four adult children—Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben—while also highlighting the lives of the Dubliners whose stories were intertwined with the phenomenon of Guinness.
A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Vision
Created and written by Steven Knight, House of Guinness promises to blend sweeping family drama with the intrigue, politics, and ambition that defined the era. The premiere offered a first glimpse at the scale of the production, which was brought to life by Kudos and Nebulastar, with direction from Tom Shankland and Mounia Akl.
On the red carpet, the cast turned heads as they stepped out for the Dublin premiere. Anthony Boyle takes on the role of Arthur Guinness, while Louis Partridge plays Edward Guinness and Fionn O’Shea portrays Benjamin Guinness. James Norton brings to life Sean Rafferty, and he is joined by Dervla Kirwan as Aunt Agnes Guinness, Niamh McCormack as Ellen Cochrane, Danielle Galligan as Lady Olivia Hedges, Seamus O’Hara as Patrick Cochrane, Michael McElhatton as John Potter, and Hilda Fay as Sultan.
Steven Knight shared his hopes for the series, expressing his desire for audiences to be gripped by the story and to feel connected to the real people being portrayed. He praised the cast, calling them a new generation of young Irish and English actors who executed the project exceptionally well. Knight noted that all of their first choices said yes, which is unusual, and emphasized the strong sense of family among the cast and crew.
Character Development and Creative Insights
James Norton provided insight into his character, Sean Rafferty, describing him as an ex-soldier with a military background. Initially austere, controlling, and intimidating, Rafferty also has a swagger and a twinkle in his eye, making him a womanizer. As the series progresses, Norton explained, Rafferty softens, revealing a heat beneath his icy exterior. This transformation is part of the journey that all characters go through, thanks to Knight’s writing.
A Prestige Production with Global Appeal
Produced by Cahal Bannon with Howard Burch, and executive produced by Karen Wilson, Elinor Day, Steven Knight, Martin Haines, Tom Shankland, and Ivana Lowell, House of Guinness is positioned as a prestige drama event with international appeal. The series aims to captivate audiences with its rich storytelling and high production values.
As the final credits rolled in Dublin, it set the stage for what could be one of the defining television moments of the year. With its compelling narrative, stellar cast, and historical depth, House of Guinness is poised to make a significant impact on global audiences.
