Ryan Blaney Secures Victory in a Tense Playoff Race

At New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the Ford drivers dominated the race, with Ryan Blaney barely edging out the competition to secure a win in the second-round opener of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Blaney, driving the No. 12 Mustang, led an impressive 116 laps, including the final 39, but faced a fierce challenge from Josh Berry, who closed in on him in the final stages.

With just 10 laps remaining, Berry pushed hard and nearly overtook Blaney, but ultimately fell short. Blaney managed to pull away and won by a margin of 0.937 seconds. This victory marked his third of the season and 16th of his career.

Blaney described the final 20 laps as one of the most challenging he has ever driven. "I was trying to bide my time and pull Josh a little bit, then he really started coming," Blaney said. "It was all I could do to hold him off, trying new lanes. That was good and clean racing. I appreciate Josh for not throwing me the bumper when he could have."

The win was significant for Blaney, who is aiming to reach the Championship 4 season finale for the third consecutive year. He became the first driver to advance into one of the eight available spots in the third round of the Cup playoffs.

Berry, driving the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford, showed strong performance despite a spin on the 82nd lap. He rebounded from his first-round elimination after finishing last in each of the first three races in the playoffs. Berry led 10 laps during the race and expressed admiration for Blaney’s performance.

"It was definitely an awesome day," Berry said. "Hats off to Ryan at the end. All our cars were really strong, and Ryan did a great job there. I was honestly surprised I was able to keep him honest at the end."

Ford Dominates Qualifying and Race Performance

The success of Ford drivers was evident not only in the race but also in qualifying. Joey Logano, a Penske star, won the pole position, completing a sweep of the top three starting spots with Blaney and Berry. The same trio led 273 of 301 laps during the race.

William Byron finished third, as the highest-finishing Chevrolet driver. Byron, who is the highest-ranked driver behind Blaney in the playoff standings, noted the dominance of the Penske team. "Penske guys were super fast. I felt like they were in another zip code," he said.

Logano, who led a race-high 147 laps, took fourth place. This was his first time starting from the pole at New Hampshire, which he considers his home track. "Blaney was wicked fast in practice, and he showed that again in the race," Logano said. "We obviously got a ton of points today, so we did what we needed to do, but I'd rather win."

Chase Elliott, who started 27th, finished fifth, while Christopher Bell took sixth as the top Toyota driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, which went undefeated in the first round of the playoffs.

Team Rivalry Adds Drama to the Race

The race turned tense for Joe Gibbs Racing when Denny Hamlin spun teammate Ty Gibbs into the Turn 2 wall while racing for 11th place. Hamlin questioned whether Gibbs was receiving preferential treatment, sparking controversy. After the incident, Hamlin had a postrace conversation with team owner Joe Gibbs and JGR director of competition Chris Gabehart before addressing the media.

"It's super unfortunate he got spun there, and obviously the contact came from us," Hamlin said. "I don't have any comment other than that. We'll work through it and all, but we'll see how it goes."

Ty Gibbs, who finished 34th, refused to address the incident or Hamlin’s comments. "It's unfortunate, but I'm excited to go race next week and looking forward to it," Gibbs said.

Joe Gibbs Racing, which dominated the first round with three consecutive victories, struggled in the first stage at New Hampshire. The team failed to earn any points in the first stage, with Hamlin, Bell, and Chase Briscoe finishing outside the top 10 in the 70-lap segment.

Upcoming Race at Kansas Speedway

The second race in the second round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs will take place at Kansas Speedway this Sunday. Kyle Larson won the previous race at the 1.5-mile track on May 11.
