3 Officers Killed in Pennsylvania While Trying to Arrest Stalker

A Tragic Encounter in Rural Pennsylvania
In a quiet area of southern Pennsylvania, where rolling farmland stretches for miles, a tragic incident unfolded that left three police officers dead and two others injured. The events began when law enforcement officers returned to a home in search of a suspect believed to be involved in a stalking case. What followed was a deadly confrontation that shocked the community and left a deep mark on the local police department.
The Northern York County Regional Police Department described the day as “dark and heartbreaking.” All three officers who lost their lives, along with a fourth officer currently hospitalized, were part of this department. As the news spread, neighboring police departments stepped in to assist with the workload, allowing the grieving personnel to focus on processing the loss.
The violence occurred during an attempt to locate Matthew James Ruth, a 24-year-old man suspected of being involved in a domestic situation that had started the previous day. An anonymous law enforcement official confirmed Ruth’s involvement but declined to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation. Ruth was killed by police at the scene.
Neighbors reported that investigators visited Ruth's home in Hanover, approximately 10 miles from the location of the shooting, twice on the day of the incident. They first arrived around noon and then again in the late afternoon before leaving around midnight with bags of evidence. Rose Miller, a neighbor, mentioned that she did not know Ruth well but remembered him working on Boy Scout fundraisers. No one answered the door at the home on Thursday.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “We need to do better as a society. We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon is the answer to resolving disputes.”
This incident marked one of the deadliest days for law enforcement in Pennsylvania this century. It matched the toll from a similar event in 2009, when three officers were ambushed by a domestic violence suspect wearing a bulletproof vest.
As the news of the tragedy spread, members of the community gathered to show their support. American flags were displayed, and people saluted as police and emergency vehicles formed a procession to the coroner’s office. Police departments across the region mourned on social media, while flowers were left outside the headquarters of the slain officers.
“We are devastated by the loss of three of our officers and continue to pray for the recovery of a fourth who remains hospitalized,” the department stated on Thursday.
Authorities have not yet identified the department affiliation of the second officer who was hospitalized or named the officers who were killed. The confrontation took place on a rural road in south-central Pennsylvania, near the Maryland border. Neighbor Dirk Anderson heard “quite a few” shots from his home across the street and wondered what was happening. He later saw a helicopter and police arrive at the scene.
The area, known as North Codorus, is about 46 miles north of Baltimore. Bryan Rice, a local resident who regularly walks the road with his wife, expressed his shock at the events. “It’s strange walking down this road now and seeing all these cars and knowing what happened here,” he said.
This tragedy adds to the list of recent incidents involving law enforcement. In February of this year, another officer was killed in York County when a man armed with a pistol and zip ties entered a hospital’s intensive care unit and took staff members hostage before a shootout that left both the man and the officer dead.
