A New Chapter for The White Lotus

Cristobal Tapia de Veer, the composer behind the iconic music of The White Lotus, has made a significant decision that marks a new chapter in his career. He has confirmed that he will not return for the show’s fourth season, citing creative differences with the show’s creator, Mike White. This announcement comes just months after Tapia de Veer won his fourth Emmy Award for Best Original Main Title Theme Music at the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Despite his absence from the ceremony, Tapia de Veer celebrated his achievement in a personal and meaningful way. On Instagram, he shared a post expressing his gratitude and pride. “I just won my fourth Emmy Award: best theme for The White Lotus season 3,” he wrote. “I respect the Academy because those votes can’t be bought. No smear campaign distracted them. Thank you, this means a lot to me in more than one way.”

The post was accompanied by a video clip of the season 3 main title music playing over footage of a firefly. “I’m happy you connected with this melody cause it was an amazing trip making it,” he added. “It’s about this firefly I met and filmed for an hour.” Notably, there was no mention of Mike White or HBO in his remarks, which is expected given the recent tensions between the composer and the show's creatives.

A History of Creative Conflict

Tapia de Veer’s decision to step away from the show was not made lightly. Earlier this year, he told the New York Times that he would not return for the fourth season due to ongoing disagreements with White and the show’s producers. The musician described several alleged disputes dating back to the first season, particularly regarding the development of the season 1 theme and episodic music.

“I ultimately walked away pretty proud of the fact that I never gave up fighting for my vision,” Tapia de Veer said. “Maybe I was being unprofessional, and for sure Mike feels that I was always unprofessional to him because I didn’t give him what he wanted. But what I gave him did this — did those Emmys, people going crazy... It was worth all the tension and almost forcing the music into the show... This was a good struggle.”

White responded to these comments during a conversation on Howard Stern’s radio show, expressing surprise at the timing of Tapia de Veer’s remarks, which came days before the season 3 finale aired. “It was kind of a bitch move,” he said. While denying a full-fledged feud, White acknowledged that the two had clashed. “I just don’t think he respected me. He wants people to know that he’s edgy and dark and I’m — I don’t know, like I watch reality TV. We never really even fought. He says we feuded, but I don’t think I ever had a fight with him — except for maybe some emails.”

White claimed that the issues between the two only emerged during the third season, alleging that Tapia de Veer no longer wanted to “go through the process” and “get notes” after the show’s success. “He is very talented. [But] I’ve never kissed somebody’s ass so hard to just get him to — to lead that horse to water,” he concluded.

A Legacy of Excellence

Despite the conflict, The White Lotus has enjoyed tremendous success. Across its first three seasons, the show has won 16 Emmys, including four for Tapia de Veer. He has received two awards for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music (seasons 1 and 3) and two for Original Dramatic Score (seasons 1 and 2). Season 3 alone received 15 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.

The 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Fans of the show can look forward to seeing the full list of winners from the event.

As the series moves forward without Tapia de Veer, the future of The White Lotus remains exciting. With its unique blend of humor, drama, and striking visuals, the show continues to captivate audiences and set a high standard for television storytelling.
