White House Plans Executive Order on Political Violence and Hate Speech

The White House is reportedly working on an executive order addressing political violence and hate speech, according to a Trump administration official. This move comes as numerous left-leaning non-profits have expressed concerns over what they perceive as efforts to undermine their work.

The administration has increased its focus on liberal organizations following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was a close ally of President Donald Trump. The president and other Republicans have accused liberal groups of contributing to rising levels of hate speech and intolerance. However, they have not publicly criticized right-leaning groups and activists that have also played a role in deepening societal divisions.

Details about the administration's plan, which may be announced later this week, are still being finalized by top advisers, including Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff. He has been involved in responding to Kirk’s killing.

Trump is currently on a state visit to Britain, which could influence when the executive order is released. The White House has accused left-wing organizations of inciting riots and attacking law enforcement officers. It has pledged to identify and target what it calls a network of groups that promote violence in American communities.

Critics argue that Trump’s focus on left-wing organizations overlooks his own actions. For example, on his first day in office, he pardoned supporters convicted of storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, including individuals who had attacked law enforcement officers.

Left-leaning groups have strongly opposed the new White House initiatives. On Wednesday, more than 120 potential targets of the administration issued a letter rejecting what they described as an attempt to misuse political violence to mischaracterize their charitable work.

Signatories of the letter include prominent left-leaning foundations such as the Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, and the Tides Foundation. They also include more mainstream nonprofits like the Bush Foundation. The letter states:

“We reject attempts to exploit political violence to mischaracterize our good work or restrict our fundamental freedoms, like freedom of speech and the freedom to give.”

Trump has suggested that Attorney General Pam Bondi could use federal racketeering statutes to prosecute groups he claims are funding left-wing violence. He has also floated the idea of designating some leftist groups as terrorist organizations.

If these plans come to fruition, it would represent another step in the Trump administration’s broader campaign to challenge and weaken institutions that oppose its views.

As part of this effort, Trump has withheld federal funds from universities like Harvard and Columbia, arguing that they promote a liberal ideology, encourage political dissent, and support antisemitism. The Justice Department has also launched an investigation into ActBlue, the primary fundraising platform for Democratic candidates.

Additionally, the White House has pressured several high-profile law firms to enter into settlements requiring them to provide services to conservative causes. These actions reflect a growing pattern of targeting institutions and organizations that do not align with the administration’s political agenda.
