Ukraine Proposes Leaders’ Summit to Address Ongoing Conflict

Ukraine has proposed a high-level summit involving key global leaders to address the ongoing conflict with Russia. The idea was presented during the third round of direct talks between the two nations, which concluded on Wednesday. The proposed summit would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and former U.S. President Donald Trump. While the exact format of the meeting remains unclear, it is expected to involve discussions between Zelensky and Putin, with the participation of the U.S. and Turkish presidents.

This proposal came as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a resolution to the war that has been raging since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Zelensky has repeatedly expressed willingness to meet with Putin to negotiate an end to the conflict, but such offers have been consistently rejected by Moscow.

The latest round of talks took place in Turkey and yielded limited progress. Delegations from both countries reported that they remain far from reaching a deal on a ceasefire or an end to the war. Andriy Yermak, head of Zelensky’s office, stated that while Russia is not yet ready to end the war, there is still time to reconsider and put an end to the conflict.

Despite the lack of progress on a ceasefire, some humanitarian issues saw advancement during the talks. These included prisoner exchanges and the retrieval of Ukrainian children who were taken during the war. Rustem Umerov, head of the Ukrainian delegation, noted that no significant progress had been made on a ceasefire agreement. Similarly, Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian delegation, stated that the positions of both sides remain far apart.

The two nations have held two previous rounds of peace talks in Istanbul, on May 16 and June 2. These discussions led to the exchange of thousands of prisoners, but little progress was made on a potential ceasefire agreement. Since the last round of talks, which occurred nearly two months ago, Russia issued a memo outlining conditions for a ceasefire. These conditions include Ukraine disarming its military and recognizing Russia’s annexation of four regions in Ukraine that were captured during the invasion. However, the Russian military has struggled to maintain control over these areas.

In his statement, Yermak emphasized Ukraine’s priorities: a ceasefire, real silence along the entire frontline, and a complete halt to strikes on civilian infrastructure. He stressed that these are essential steps toward achieving genuine peace.

Donald Trump has been vocal about his desire to broker peace in the region. In recent weeks, he has increasingly criticized Putin, expressing disappointment with the Kremlin leader in a recent interview with the BBC. Trump also announced that the U.S. has brokered a deal to send more weapons to Ukraine. These arms will be funded by NATO allies in Europe, who agreed earlier this year to increase their defense spending.

Trump has also warned Putin that new sanctions will be imposed on Russia and other countries that purchase Moscow’s exports if a ceasefire is not reached within 50 days. Despite these warnings, Russia has not wavered from its demands and continues to conduct drone and missile attacks targeting cities across Ukraine.
