Trump says U.S. troops may return to base in Afghanistan near China

Trump's Proposal to Reestablish U.S. Presence in Afghanistan
During a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Donald Trump revealed that he is considering the possibility of reestablishing a U.S. military presence at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. This idea comes four years after the U.S. withdrawal from the country, which left the base under the control of the Taliban. Trump tied this proposal to the broader goal of countering China, the United States' primary global rival.
Trump mentioned the potential return to Bagram during a discussion about ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While he described his comments as "breaking news," this is not the first time he has raised the idea of reestablishing a U.S. position in Afghanistan. The White House and the Pentagon have not yet responded to inquiries about whether any planning has been done for such a move. Bagram Air Base was a key location during America's 20-year conflict in Afghanistan, and its strategic significance remains a topic of interest.
During his first term, Trump negotiated the terms of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, leading to a deal with the Taliban. However, the final stages of the withdrawal under President Joe Biden were marked by chaos, including the collapse of the Afghan government, a deadly bombing at Kabul Airport, and the evacuation of thousands of Afghans. This event became a major political challenge for Biden and was widely criticized by Republicans, including Trump.
Trump has consistently pointed to the Afghanistan withdrawal as a failure of Biden's leadership. He claimed that the situation in Afghanistan emboldened Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine in 2022. Trump argued that if the U.S. had maintained a strong and dignified presence in Afghanistan, particularly by keeping Bagram Air Base, it would have prevented such actions. He suggested that the Taliban might be willing to allow the U.S. to return, citing their current struggles with economic issues, international recognition, and internal conflicts.
The strategic value of Bagram Air Base, according to Trump, lies in its proximity to China. He noted that the base is only an hour away from where China produces its nuclear weapons. This proximity could provide the U.S. with a critical advantage in monitoring and responding to Chinese military activities.
Despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the Taliban, there have been indirect communications. Recently, an American tourist who was kidnapped two years ago was released by the Taliban. Additionally, the Taliban announced an agreement with U.S. envoys regarding a prisoner exchange, aiming to improve relations between the two countries. However, details of the exchange remain unclear, and the White House has not commented on the talks.
U.S. Central Command and the Pentagon have directed questions about Bagram back to the White House. As the debate over U.S. involvement in Afghanistan continues, the possibility of a renewed military presence remains a topic of discussion among policymakers and analysts.
