The chilling future of The Walking Dead revealed

The Walking Dead Universe Continues to Expand
The longer that the Walking Dead franchise continues on AMC, the more audiences wonder how much it has left in the tank. It’s understandable given that it has been 15 years since the beloved original series premiered on the cable network — even more so when you factor in that the show itself ended nearly three years ago. However, the TWD Universe has found new, exciting, and innovative ways to keep the story alive.
New Spinoffs Bring Fresh Stories
The first of three new spinoffs, The Walking Dead: Dead City, brought back Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan to tell a story set in New York City. Daryl Dixon followed Norman Reedus’ titular hero as he traveled to France in search of survivors, eventually joined by Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride). Meanwhile, The Ones Who Live brought Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira’s Michonne back to screens for the first time in years to wrap up their story.
While the latter of these shows has concluded, the prior two are still ongoing. This raises the question of where the TWD Universe goes next. After all, this is a franchise that has already launched spinoffs before these newer stories took center stage. Is there really room for more? According to the chief content officer, the answer seems to be yes.
A Potential Future Spanning Another 15 Years
Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe at AMC, recently spoke about the future of the franchise. In an interview with SFX Magazine, he mentioned that he could see the franchise running for another 15 years, potentially reaching 2040 or beyond. He emphasized that The Walking Dead is about compelling characters in an unforgiving world, but one that is not without hope.
This vision aligns with the success of the franchise's expansion. While the original series was told through the eyes of Rick Grimes, it challenged that status quo by continuing after his departure in season 9. The franchise expanded further with spinoffs like Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and Tales of the Walking Dead, each offering new characters and stories.
Bringing Back Characters from Previous Series
Gimple also hinted at the possibility of bringing back characters from previous Walking Dead series. He noted that there are characters from every Walking Dead series that he would love to tell stories with again. Some could pick up from the last time they were seen, while others might see them after a long time has passed.
Robert Kirkman created indelible, addictive characters, and Gimple said that the team has always tried to keep pace with him. He believes that the choices these characters make define them and change them, which is the stuff of great storytelling. This can go on and on as long as there are terrific characters to work with.
Exciting Possibilities for Future Storylines
Fans have been eager to revisit characters from Fear, World Beyond, Tales, or even supporting characters from Dead City, Daryl Dixon, or The Ones Who Live. For example, we could see how Daryl’s Laurent and Ash make it back to America and whether they reach the Commonwealth. That could be a storyline for a future season of their show or even the premise of another.
Additionally, fans have longed for a crossover between Rick and Fear’s Madison Clark (Kim Dickens). The fact that the two faces of the original Walking Dead shows have not yet crossed over is a missed opportunity, but now seems like the perfect chance to make it happen.
What’s Next for the TWD Universe?
As we look ahead, we have the third seasons of Dead City and Daryl Dixon to look forward to, along with an expected fourth season for the latter. Beyond that, it seems anything is possible. The potential for another 15 years of storytelling highlights just how exciting it is to be a fan of this classic franchise.
With new spinoffs, character returns, and fresh storylines, the TWD Universe continues to evolve and captivate audiences. Whether it’s through new characters, returning favorites, or unexpected crossovers, the world of The Walking Dead remains as vibrant and engaging as ever.
