Dwayne Johnson's Transformation for a New Role

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has opened up about his recent transformation, revealing that he slimmed down to prepare for a new role. In an interview with CBS News' Tracy Smith on Sunday Morning, Johnson shared insights into his physical and emotional journey for his upcoming film.

“I’m svelte!” Johnson laughed when asked about his new look. “Because I’m preparing for a role.”

Smith asked if this marked a new era for him, to which Johnson responded, “It’s a new, I wouldn’t say chapter. I would say new book. A whole new book. And I love it.”

Preparing for The Smashing Machine

Johnson explained that he actually gained weight for his role in the 2025 sports drama The Smashing Machine, adding just over 30 pounds. He described the challenge of transforming his body as a significant undertaking.

“I had to transform my body, which was a massive challenge for me,” he said. “I like working out and being physical, but this was different. It’s different if you put on size and muscle. I’ve done that before for some roles, but this is the kind of muscle that requires real fast twitch fibers, which is a different kind of muscle altogether.”

In addition to the physical changes, Johnson underwent three hours of makeup and prosthetics to portray the character of Kerr. The film, which follows the story of a mixed martial artist grappling with addiction, has already made a strong impression. At the Venice Film Festival, the movie received a 15-minute standing ovation, leaving Johnson emotional.

Emotional Depth and Personal Connection

Johnson reflected on how the role required him to dig deep emotionally. He shared that he visited his childhood home, where he had been evicted, to connect with the feelings of despair that his character experienced.

“I went back to what it’s like being a 15-year-old kid and coming home to be evicted,” he said. “The thing I was running from—ripping myself open—is actually what I needed the most. It made me realize that acting and telling these stories are more meaningful than ever.”

Supporting Cast and Upcoming Premiere

Alongside Johnson, actress Emily Blunt plays Dawn Staples, the wife of the film's protagonist. MMA fighter Ryan Bader and Bas Rutten also appear in the movie, alongside boxer Oleksandr Usyk. The film is set to premiere on October 3.

Reflections on Career and Gratitude

The standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival has sparked discussions about the film's potential for Oscar success. Johnson reflected on his career and expressed gratitude for the moment.

“I went into Venice wanting to be unattached to an outcome,” he said. “I was overwhelmed and moved by the response. I was so grateful because it signified so much in this moment, especially for a career I’ve been lucky to have.”

Johnson's journey for The Smashing Machine highlights his dedication to his craft and his willingness to embrace challenges that push him beyond his comfort zone. As the film prepares for its premiere, fans and critics alike are eagerly anticipating the impact it will make.
