Northampton and Freedom Soccer Tie in Tactical Showdown

A Defensive Showdown in a Tied Match
The Northampton boys soccer team faced off against Freedom, a fellow 7-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference contender, just under 24 hours after hosting the unbeaten Emmaus. The Konkrete Kids had suffered a hard-fought 1-0 loss to the Green Hornets on Monday night, which might have influenced their defensive approach during the match against Freedom.
Head coach Chris Bastidas, in his fourth year at the helm of Northampton, described the game as one of the strangest he has ever been part of. "You play for 100 minutes and no one gets a great chance," he said. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, with both teams struggling to create significant opportunities.
Freedom, who came into the match on a seven-game win streak, including an 11-0 victory over Dieruff, had not conceded a goal since their second game of the season against Whitehall. Despite this, the match was a tight contest, with few chances for either side during regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
Tactical Adjustments and Challenges
Freedom’s junior midfielder Gavin Lynch pointed out that their midfield struggled at times, playing too directly and failing to maintain possession effectively. "We could’ve played to feet more. It was kind of like a kick-and-run type of thing," Lynch noted. He also praised Northampton's compact formation, which made it difficult for Freedom to break through.
Northampton had to make a tactical shift early in the game when senior defender Dante Keen, a key player in their back three, left the field due to an aggravated injury. Junior Blake Turner moved to the sweeper role, while junior Jason Brabec and freshman Camden Armour rotated on the left side of defense. Right-sided center back Kadon Szoke remained in his position.
Coach Bastidas emphasized the importance of clean, simple soccer from his defenders. "They were phenomenal coming in and doing what we asked of them, playing clean, simple soccer, getting behind the ball and not feeling like they needed to win it right away," he said.
Possession and Set Pieces
In the second half, Northampton enjoyed more possession and shifted from a back three to a back five as they pushed higher up the field. Lynch acknowledged the challenge posed by Northampton's formation. "It’s really tough. Next time, we just have to break them down, playing direct, one-two passes."
Northampton's junior goalkeeper Ryan Nahf highlighted the difficulty of dealing with the wind and Freedom's long punts. "I knew the line had to drop back," he said. "One mis-touch or misread could’ve affected us really bad. We’re lucky it didn’t, we had great defense here."
Missed Opportunities
With 21 minutes left in regulation, Freedom's Eduardo Freitas had a chance to score when he curled a shot that hit the crossbar. Beyond that, Freedom created a few chances off set pieces. Northampton's best opportunity came late in the first overtime when senior forward Joey Snyder drove past a defender, but his low cross deflected out for a goal kick.
Nahf, who finished with five saves, said the team had to ease into the game after two consecutive matches. "It was just a fight," he said. Northampton, currently tied with Emmaus for most goals in the EPC with 40 so far this season, will host Easton at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Coach's Perspective and Future Goals
Bastidas expressed his desire to win games rather than settle for draws. "I don’t play for ties, at all. Sometimes I thought our brains were thinking something and the feet weren’t catching up. It was awesome though, I loved the fight and desire we played with."
The Patriots, who have been without their most experienced player, senior defender Ben Soleymani, for the last week, will look to extend their unbeaten run to nine games when they travel to Emmaus (9-0) at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Lynch acknowledged the challenges of rebuilding the team after losing 14 seniors, eight of whom were starters last year. "As a team, we’re still coming together and getting the chemistry built."
