City Administrator Dr. Patrick Burtch made the announcement that he would retire on August 16. His decision was driven by a desire to allow Maumee to heal and reset after a challenging period. "With all the stuff that goes on in Maumee, it’s time for Maumee to heal and sometimes people have to step aside to make sure that happens," Burtch shared with 13 Action News.

The past year has been particularly tumultuous for Maumee, marked by a series of issues ranging from sewer problems to divisive city ordinances and an upcoming high-stakes election. These challenges have led many residents and city leaders to call for change. Burtch believes that this transition could be the catalyst for uniting the community.

Burtch emphasized that city building involves more than just infrastructure; it encompasses economic development, improving financial stability, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents. "City building is about economic development, whether it’s about fixing the sewers, whether it’s about making you financially solvent, whether it’s about repairing a road or fixing an uptown so it’s more pedestrian friendly… all of those things in a component part is larger than the whole," he explained.

The City of Maumee released a statement highlighting Burtch's contributions during his tenure. It described him as a driving force behind several transformational initiatives that improved safety, infrastructure, and the overall quality of life for residents. Burtch was credited with making Maumee a safer, more attractive community and helping to revitalize the local economy through support for new business development, housing growth, and job creation.

Despite his achievements, Burtch expressed a sense of regret over not being able to complete the sewer program and continue pushing for economic development. He felt it was time to retire and spend more time with his family while allowing Maumee to move forward.

Mayor Jim MacDonald praised Burtch for his tireless service and leadership, stating that his commitment to progress and community well-being has made a lasting impact on the city.
