Liverpool's stance on January bid for Marc Guehi revealed

Liverpool's Decision to Pass on Marc Guehi in January Transfer Window
Liverpool has reportedly decided not to pursue the signing of Marc Guehi during the January transfer window. The Reds had reached an agreement with Crystal Palace for the England defender just hours before the deadline, but the deal fell through at the last moment. The South London club pulled out due to concerns that manager Oliver Glasner might leave if his captain was sold against his wishes.
According to reports, Liverpool will not re-enter the market for Guehi mid-season. This decision is based on the fact that the 25-year-old center-back is expected to be available on a free transfer next summer. His current contract with Crystal Palace is set to expire in 2026, and he has no intention of signing a new deal with the club.
No Urgent Need for a Center-Back
Liverpool lost a key center-back earlier this year when Jarell Quansah was sold to Bayer Leverkusen. However, the club managed to replace him by signing Giovanni Leoni from Parma. This move has left the Reds without an immediate need to bring in another central defender at this stage.
Despite this, other clubs are reportedly interested in Guehi’s services. The Telegraph suggests that competition for the player will be fierce, but Liverpool remains confident that Guehi wants to join the club. There is also sympathy from the Merseyside side for Guehi’s situation, as they understand how much he wanted the transfer to happen. Liverpool is convinced that the deal will still be on the table next summer.
Interest from Top European Clubs
Several top European clubs are said to be interested in Guehi, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Juventus. His value has increased significantly over the past 18 months, making him a highly sought-after player. From January 1, 2026, Guehi will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club ahead of a potential free transfer the following summer. At that point, he could receive a substantial signing-on fee along with a lucrative contract.
Despite the interest from other clubs, there are indications that Guehi may ultimately join Liverpool. There is no suggestion that he will refuse to play for Crystal Palace when the season resumes, although his frustration is understandable given the events of deadline day.
Manager’s Stance on Keeping Guehi
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been clear about his desire to keep Guehi. In a recent interview after a 3-0 win against Aston Villa, where Guehi scored, Glasner emphasized the importance of retaining the player. He stated, “I told the chairman we have to keep Marc if we want to play a successful season. We have no chance to find the right replacement in one day. We all agreed that we just sell Marc if we have the right replacement in the building.”
Glasner added that the club had aimed to find a replacement by July 1, but by August 31, they still had no suitable alternative. He described Guehi as a crucial player and one of the team’s key figures, highlighting his role as captain. This sentiment reflects the broader understanding that Guehi is a vital part of the Palace squad, making his potential departure even more significant.
